88 elderly patients were evacuated from a retirement facility last night at 7:35 PM as Salem Fire Department crews arrived at 4050 12th Street SE, where an alarm was sounding at Redwood Heights Retirement.

Fire officials say a passerby noticed a large plume of smoke while driving east on SE Jennifer Street in Clackamas at midnight. They followed the smoke to the business and called 911. Witnesses state that a large amount of smoke was coming from the eaves of the building.

A Sandy-area man died Friday morning from injuries sustained in a fire incident north of Sandy, according to the Clackamas County Medical Examiner. A joint investigation is being conducted by fire, police and safety officials.
