Earthquake Near Solomon Islands Generates deadly Tsunami

Homes, hospitals, schools and large sections of land were evacuated as panic gripped parts of Australia's east coast and residents headed for higher ground.

(HONORIA) - Map of tsunami path 4_2_07 A massive undersea earthquake Monday in the South Pacific Ocean sent a tsunami several yards high, crashing into the Solomon Islands.

Homes, hospitals, schools and large sections of land in the affected areas were evacuated as panic gripped residents who wisely headed for higher ground.

The China Daily Press reports local police and residents talking about a huge wave that struck the western town of Gizo. Buildings were inundated and widespread destruction was reported.

Magnitude 5.3 Earthquake Reported off Oregon Coast

A 4.5 magnitude quake hit the same area on Sunday.

(BANDON) - Oregon Coast A magnitude 5.3 earthquake rattled off the Oregon coast Wednesday.

The USGS says the quake struck at 2:12 PM, 151 miles WNW of the town of Bandon.

The quake had a depth of 3.7 miles.

Magnitude 4.5 Earthquake Reported Sunday off Oregon Coast

This is the fourth quake off the Oregon coast in the past few weeks.

(BANDON) - Oregon Coast The USGS says a magnitude 4.5 earthquake shook off the Oregon coast Sunday morning at 7:34 AM.

The quake was centered 147 miles WNW from the town of Bandon, and had a depth of 8.3 miles.

Three Earthquakes Rattle Off Oregon Coast

No damage or injuries were reported.

(GOLD BEACH) - Salem-News.com Three light earthquakes shook off the Oregon Coast last week according to the USGS.

The first one occurred on Wednesday at 7:24 AM.

The 4.4 magnitude quake was located 118 miles west of Gold Beach.

The next quake struck just minutes later at 7:38 AM.

Magnitude 4.9 Earthquake Rattles Off Northern California Coast

The quake comes just two days after Sunday’s 6.7 earthquake in Hawaii. No tsunami warnings were issued for Oregon or California.

(EUREKA, Calif.) - Map showing approximate epicenter of quake off California coast A 4.9 magnitude earthquake rattled off the Northern California coast at 12:53 PM Tuesday afternoon.

According to the US Geological Service, the quakes' epicenter was located 89 miles west/southwest of Eureka, California.

No tsunami warnings for Oregon or California were issued by the National Weather Service.

Officials say the quake had a depth of just over 11 miles.

The Salvation Army Response to Earthquake in Hawaii

Monetary donations may be sent to your local Salvation Army earmarked “Hawaiian Earthquake Disaster Relief” or they can be made online.

(PORTLAND) - Salvation Army logo The Salvation Army in Hawaii activated its emergency response network across the state in response to the 6.6 magnitude earthquake which hit in the early hours of Sunday, October 15th.

Salvation Army disaster personnel are handing out water and sandwiches to travelers stranded at the airport and are on standby to assist the Red Cross in their sheltering operation on the Big Island.

At present, power outages, jammed phone lines and limited access to food supplies are reported on the islands. Staff is all accounted for and report that there has been no major damage to any Salvation Army facilities.

Small Quake Rattles Off Oregon Coast

(NEWPORT) - Oregon Coast Image The U-S Geologic Survey says a minor earthquake shook Monday night nearly 300 miles off the Oregon coast.

The USGS says the 4.5 magnitude quake occurred just after 6:30 PM about 275 miles due west from Newport.

No injuries or damages were reported.

Earthquake Reminds NW Residents of Risk, and Importance of Emergency Preparedness

New site offers many ideas on how to make your home and family safer in the event of a natural disaster.

(VANCOUVER, Wa.) - House drawing With National Preparedness Month in September just around the corner, one might think that Thursday's early morning earthquake event was staged, if that was possible. A new coalition of public and private organizations has been working to promote National Preparedness Month activities through a new website, www.preparetogether.org.

The web site went live on August 1st to emphasize the importance of emergency preparedness to the public. The timing of the earthquake was both coincidental and convenient for getting the word out about the need for emergency preparedness.

Although the minor ground shaking in the wee hours was startling to some area residents, it came as no surprise to officials at Clark Regional Emergency Services Agency in Vancouver.

Minor Earthquake Rattles Portland-Metro Area

On Sunday, a magnitude 4.0 earthquake shook at 4:30 PM, 200 miles off the Oregon Coast.

(PORTLAND) - earthquake area map A 3.8 magnitude earthquake struck at about 1:39 AM this morning near Cherry Grove, Washington.

The USGS says the minor quake was centered 11.6 miles below the earth’s surface.

There have been several small aftershocks.

Washington State, and Clark County emergency officials say there have been no reports of any damage or injuries.

Small Quake Shakes Central Part of The Willamette Valley

(SCOTT MILLS AP) - usgs earthquake map A small earthquake rattled the central part of the Willamette River Valley this morning.

The quake was a preliminary magnitude three, probably triggered by a fault that produces many similar shakings.

James Roddey is earth sciences information officer for the Oregon Department of Geology. He says that area is notorious for many small earthquakes.
