OSU Researchers: Recurring Dead Zone Off Oregon is Spreading

This year for the first time, the effect of the low-oxygen zone is also being seen in coastal waters off Washington, researchers at OSU and the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary indicate.

(CORVALLIS) - Various A hypoxic “dead zone” has formed off the Oregon Coast for the fifth time in five years, according to researchers at Oregon State University.

A fundamental new trend in atmospheric and ocean circulation patterns in the Pacific Northwest appears to have begun, scientists say, and apparently is expanding its scope beyond Oregon waters.

For The First Time in Nearly 100 Years, OSU to Perform Shakespearean Play Outdoors (AUDIO)

Director Scott Palmer found that this August’s adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet” appears to be the first Shakespearean play at OSU performed outdoors since the 1920s.

(CORVALLIS) - For the first time in nearly a century, the University Theatre program at Oregon State University will present a Shakespearean play as it was meant to be done – in the great out-of-doors.

“These plays are meant to be performed outdoors,” Director Scott Palmer said.

Soldier Killed in Iraq From Mid-Willamette Valley

29-year old Jason Evey is one of several Corvallis soldiers to die in the war.

(BAGHDAD) - Oregon soldier killed artwork The Department of Defense has announced the death of another Oregon soldier in the war in Iraq.

29-year old Jason M. Evey of Stockton, Calif., died of injuries sustained when his Bradley Fighting Vehicle came in contact with an improvised explosive device during combat operations in Baghdad, Iraq, on July 16th.

$1.5 Million Grant to Strengthen Science Education in Oregon

(CORVALLIS) - Photo of Oregon State campus with flowers Oregon State University has received a grant of $1.5 million from the prestigious Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) in Chevy Chase, Md., to bolster science education at all grade levels throughout the state.

This four-year award will support initiatives for undergraduate students at OSU, including summer research experiences and enhancements to the life sciences curriculum, as well as OSU’s outreach and educational programs for elementary and high school students.

Edward J. Ray, president of Oregon State University, says investing in science education at all grade levels is essential. “For the United States to maintain its position as the world leader in science and technology, we must cultivate a passion for the study of science from elementary school through college,” Ray said.

Camp Adair Public Meeting Set For Tuesday in Corvallis

During it’s short operation, the camp, was the second largest city in Oregon.

(CORVALLIS) - Camp Adair in Oregon The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is holding, a public informational meeting from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM, Tuesday, at the Santiam Christian Schools’ choir room, located at 7220 N.E. Arnold Ave., in Corvallis., to provide the public an overview of the Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP), Site Investigation (SI) process and the current work plan.

The Corps is evaluating Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) that had historically been used for military training.

One of these sites is Camp Adair and Adair Air Force Station, located in parts of Polk, Benton and Linn counties, near Corvallis.

(CORVALLIS) - Oregon State University is hosting its annual two-day summer blood drive July 18th-19th in the campus Memorial Union Quad.

Appointments are needed and can be made online at www.givelife.org or call 800-GIVE-LIFE.

Donation hours on Tuesday, July 18th, are 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Wednesday, July 19th.

Giving blood takes less than one hour.

Corvallis Man Arrested for Fatal March Crash in Santiam Pass

The man who died, 57-year old Ju Feng was a Chinese national visiting the United States.

(CORVALLIS) - Crash scene on Santiam Pass March 06 Oregon State Police troopers say they arrested a Corvallis man Friday on charges stemming from a March 2006 fatal motor vehicle crash on the Santiam Pass. 34-year old Pengcheng Wu of Corvallis will face charges for Criminally Negligent Homicide.

Police say Wu was the driver of a 1998 Chevrolet Prism four-door sedan that was westbound on Highway 20 near milepost 79 on March 18th 2006, at approximately 8:10 PM, when the vehicle apparently crossed the centerline and collided with an eastbound 2006 GMC Yukon sport utility vehicle, driven by 65-year old Robert L. Morris of Bend.

A passenger in the Honda, 57-year old Ju Feng died at the scene. Feng was a Chinese national and was visiting the United States at the time of the collision.

Crash on Southbound I-5 Kills Passenger and Seriously Injures Driver

Traffic was moving slowly by the scene of the crash Saturday at 7:00 PM.

(CORVALLIS) - fatal crash graphic A female passenger was killed and a male driver seriously injured Saturday afternoon in a single vehicle rollover crash southbound on Interstate 5 about 1/2 mile south of the Highway 34 interchange.

No names are being released pending next of kin notification.

State troopers say the crash happened Saturday at approximately 3:50 PM. A vehicle was southbound in the right hand lane on Interstate 5 near milepost 227 when, for an unknown reason, the driver lost control and went across the left hand lane before rolling on the inside center median shoulder.

City And Corvallis Regional Communications Center Agree on New Three Year Contract

(CORVALLIS) - The Corvallis City Council has approved a new three year labor agreement between the city and the Corvallis Regional Communications Center Association.

CRCCA members had previously ratified the agreement on June 8, 2006. The new contract covers the period from July 2006 thorough June 2009.

Mayor Helen Berg said, " this contract has many positive aspects which will benefit both the employee and the city for many years to come."

The Association elected to change unit representation, they previously had been represented by AFSCME., therefore the positions represented by the Association have not had a wage adjustment since June 2004 and had fallen significantly behind comparator Oregon communities in total compensation (wages, leaves, and benefits). At the same time, the positions are funded though user charges to other agencies using City provided 9-1-1 services.

OSU Alum and NASA Astronaut to Deliver da Vinci Days Address

Pettit served as flight engineer and science officer aboard the International Space Station in 2003 for the three-man Expedition-6 crew that included American Ken Bowersox and Russian Nikolai Budarin.

(CORVALLIS) - NASA astronaut and Oregon State University alumnus Donald Pettit, who spent almost six months aboard the International Space Station after the space shuttle Columbia tragedy, will be the keynote speaker for da Vinci Days, an annual festival celebrating art, science and technology.

After the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated as it re-entered Earth’s atmosphere, scientists scrambled to bring Pettit and his crew safely back to Earth aboard the tiny Russian Soyuz spacecraft.
