Mears to Drive No. 5; Eury Jr. Remains Earnhardt Jr. Crew Chief

Hendrick Motorsports is evaluating alternative numbers for the Earnhardt team, which currently uses the No. 25 on its Chevrolet race cars.

(CONCORD, N.C. ) - Dale Earnhardt JrCasey Mears will drive the No. 5 Kellogg's/CARQUEST Chevrolets for Hendrick Motorsports in the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, joining a team that secured its second consecutive Chase for the Championship berth Sunday at California Speedway.

In his first season with Hendrick Motorsports, Mears has notched one victory, a pole position, four top-five finishes and six top-10s through 25 races.

When driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. joins Hendrick Motorsports for the 2008 Sprint Cup Series season, Tony Eury Jr. will be his crew chief.

It's Official: Joe Gibbs Racing to Switch to Toyota in 2008

JGR will field Camrys in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR Grand National Series.

(HUNTERSVILLE, N.C.) - tony stewart photoJoe Gibbs Racing, winners of three NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series championships and over 70 NASCAR races, will campaign Toyota Camrys in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR Grand National Series beginning in 2008.

JGR has been associated with General Motors since its debut in the 1992 Daytona 500.

Two of JGR’s drivers – Stewart and Denny Hamlin – are currently in position to challenge for this year’s championship.

Vikings McClintock, Howland Out for The Year

McClintock, a sophomore fullback, suffered a right knee injury late in the third period of last Saturday's game.

Howland, a sophomore quarterback, suffered an injury to the second metatarsel of his left foot on the very next play.

(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - Portland occer playersThe shorthanded University of Portland women’s soccer team is atop the national polls one week into the regular season after an impressive Labor Day weekend.

The Pilots moved up from the preseason No. 4 to No. 1 in the first regular season polls announced on Tuesday.

North Carolina, the defending national champions and unanimous preseason No. 1, suffered a 1-0 loss at home to South Carolina. Notre Dame tied Michigan 0-0 in their season-opener, while UCLA dropped a 2-1 decision at Texas.

Oregon Opens Cross Country Season Saturday

The Oregon men are coming off of first-place finishes in the Pac-10 Conference and NCAA West Region championships.

(EUGENE, Ore. ) - oregon cross countryThe University of Oregon men’s and women’s cross country teams will open their 2007 season when they host Portland State in the Sunriver Open beginning at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Meadows Golf Course in Sunriver.

The Oregon women will get things underway with a three-mile race that begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s four-mile run that starts at 6:00 p.m.

The competition marks the first of six in-state appearances on the Ducks’ eight-meet schedule.

Oregon remains undefeated (7-0) and has not dropped a game in 2007. The Dons fall to 5-2 on the year, with both of their losses coming against Pac-10 competition (Oregon and Washington).

Beavers Taylor Named Pac-10 Player of the Week

Taylor now has 36 career goals and 87 points going into the rest of her senior season.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - OSU Jodie TaylorOregon State women’s soccer player Jodie Taylor has been named the Pac-10 Conference’s women’s soccer player of the week for the week of Aug. 28 - Sept. 3.

Commissioner Tom Hansen announced the award Tuesday after Taylor broke Oregon State’s all-time scoring and point record during the Beaver’s games against Cal State Northridge and No.4 ranked Portland.

The forward from Merseyside, England has been a staple in Oregon State’s offense and continues to show her talent and leadership during the 2007 season.
