Portland Meadows, Thistledown Racetracks for Sale

MEC began operating Portland Meadows in July 2001.

(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - Portland Meadows RacetrackMagna Entertainment Corp. today announced that, consistent with its previously announced strategic review of assets and operations, it plans to sell two of its racetrack operations: Thistledown, a thoroughbred racetrack located near Cleveland, Ohio, and its interest in Portland Meadows, a thoroughbred racetrack located in Portland, Oregon.

Frank Stronach, MEC's Chairman and Interim Chief Executive Officer, remarked, "Although MEC remains strongly committed to the racing industry, the fact remains that Thistledown and Portland Meadows are confronted with very difficult operational and regulatory challenges.

Linfield (0-0) at Western Oregon (1-0)

Sophomore running back Ben Kuenzi rushed for 206 yards on 33 carries and the Western Oregon defense stifled the Willamette run game as the Wolves opened the season with a 23-9 win over the Bearcats.

(MONMOUTH, Ore. ) - linfield football Another local Cat from the Northwest Conference comes to McArthur Field this week when Linfield visits.

The Wildcats, ranked No. 13 nationally in the latest NCAA Division III poll, will open their season in this 6:00 p.m. encounter Saturday in Monmouth.

The Wildcats finished 6-3 in 2006 and were second in the Northwest Conference behind Whitworth, but missed the NCAA Division III playoffs for the first time in six seasons.

Western Oregon, Linfield Battle to Deadlock

Western Oregon fired 24 shots and Linfield had 13 in a day in which the goalkeepers kept busy.

(MONMOUTH, Ore. ) - WOU Ally MeyerWestern Oregon and Linfield provided shots galore but neither team could find the net during a 0-0 double overtime tie in non-conference women's soccer at the WOU Soccer Field.

The Wolves are now 0-3-1 on the season, while Linfield is 0-1-1.

Western Oregon will next host Pacific University on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.

Horton Completes Oregon Baseball Coaching Staff

During Checketts last five years coaching, 12 pitchers have signed professional contracts.

(EUGENE, Ore. ) - George HortonUniversity of Oregon manager George Horton has rounded out his inaugural staff at the school with the hiring of Oregon native and former UC Riverside pitching coach Andrew Checketts.

Checketts, 31, who spent the past six seasons at UCR, joins Horton and former Cal State Fullerton assistant Jason Gill as the people in charge of rebuilding Ducks’ baseball after a 26-year hiatus.

Upon his arrival at UC Riverside, the West Linn High School product made an immediate impact as the staff earned run average improved by almost three runs and the team broke the school record for strikeouts in his first year.

Oregon State WR Stroughter to Play Tonight vs Cincinnati

Kickoff for Thursday’s ESPN nationally televised game is scheduled for 4:46 p.m. PDT.

(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) - Sammie StroughterOregon State University head football coach Mike Riley announced Wednesday that senior receiver Sammie Stroughter is expected to play in Thursday’s night’s non-conference football game between the Beavers (1-0) and Cincinnati Bearcats (1-0) at Nippert Stadium.

Riley indicated that Stroughter, an Associated Press Third Team All-American last season, will not start, but will play at receiver and possibly as a punt returner.

The Sacramento native accounted for 1,293 receiving yards last season on 74 receptions, including five touchdown scores. He also scored three touchdowns on returns.

(NEW YORK) - Roger FedererFor all the talk of how Roger Federer towers over the sport of tennis, very little, at least on the scoreboard, separated Andy Roddick from Federer in their quarterfinal showdown under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

There was Roddick in the first set tiebreak, having just hit a volley winner to bring the tiebreak score to 6-5 in Federer’s favor.

The crowd roared.

(NEW YORK) - Venus WilliamsNo. 12-seed American Venus Williams served an ace to open her quarterfinal match against No. 3-seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia. But her ultimate win, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6, would not come easily.
