Vikings McClintock, Howland Out for The Year

"I was very disappointed to lose two guys of that caliber, but it's a tough, cruel game," said Viking Head Coach Jerry Glanville.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Both Bobby McClintock and Tygue Howland are lost for season to the Portland State Vikings following injuries in a season-opening loss to McNeese State.

MRIs on both players, done on Tuesday, revealed they both have serious injuries.

McClintock, a sophomore fullback, suffered a right knee injury late in the third period of last Saturday's game.

The MRI revealed what team doctors feared - a torn ACL as well as torn lateral meniscus. McClintock had 14 rushing yards and 57 receiving yards in the game before his injury.

Howland, a sophomore quarterback, suffered an injury to the second metatarsel of his left foot on the very next play.

His MRI revealed a serious injury and will require surgery to repair. Howland had completed 12 of 24 passes for 126 yards in the game before the injury.

"I was very disappointed to lose two guys of that caliber, but it's a tough, cruel game," said Viking Head Coach Jerry Glanville. "I think Bobby might have been our best offensive player."

This marks the second year in a row that Howland has suffered a season-ending injury during his first significant action of the year.

In 2006, Howland tore his ACL in the game against Cal after he had replaced an injured Sawyer Smith.

Surgical dates have yet to be scheduled.

ROSTER CHANGES

As a result of Howland's injury, senior Brian White becomes the Vikings starter at quarterback.

White threw for 150 yards on 11 of 18 passing against McNeese State.

With season-ending injuries to two of the top three Viking fullbacks already, Portland State is going to the other side of the ball for help.

Linebackers Dallas Smith and Ronnie Fa’avae have both moved to backup fullback.

Senior Olaniyi Sobomehin will take over the starting role.

The Vikings also have true freshman Grant Schuberg, but want him to use his redshirt year.

Also, junior Steven Murphy, who showed promise at the wide receiver position early in fall camp has moved back to cornerback.
