Spurs Open Title Defense With 106-97 Win Over Portland

Portland will try and rebound on Friday when the Blazers travel to New Orleans.

(SAN ANTONIO) - LaMarcus AldridgeLaMarcus Aldridge scored 27, but the Portland Trail Blazers couldn't overcome a 10-point halftime deficit in a 106-97 season-opening loss to the defending champion Spurs on Tuesday.

Martell Webster scored 21, while Joel Przybilla had 13 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. Tim Duncan had 24 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Spurs.

Willamette's Mark Speckman to be Spotlighted Saturday on ABC

The Willamette Bearcats are 3-5 overall, and 2-2 Northwest Conference play this year.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Mark SpeckmanWillamette University football Head Coach Mark Speckman will be one of three coaches featured this weekend on the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Spotlight on ABC-TV.

Speckman is in his 10th season as the head coach of Willamette's football team. The 30-minute show will air on Saturday at 4 p.m. (PDT) on KATU-TV in Portland, Ore.

Little Leaves Dodgers; Torre, A-Rod May Head West

The anticipated addition of Torre has already sparked speculation that free-agent third baseman Alex Rodriguez and bench coach Don Mattingly would follow him to Los Angeles.

(LOS ANGELES) - Alex Cynthia RodriguezDodgers Manager Grady Little ended a month of intrigue Tuesday by resigning with a year left on his contract, paving the way for the hiring of former Yankees manager Joe Torre as his replacement.

There are media reports that Torre will sign a three-year, $14.5 million contract with the Dodgers after rejecting a one-year deal at $5 million (plus incentives) from the Yankees two weeks ago.

Portland - Western Oregon Tip-Off Season Halloween Night

As part of the Halloween theme, there will be free trick-or-treating in all the Residence Halls on campus.

(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - Sherrard WatsonThe University of Portland men’s basketball team tips off its 2007-08 season on Wednesday against the Western Oregon Wolves at 7 p.m. at the Chiles Center.

The Pilots return two starters and five lettermen from last year’s team which finished 9-23 overall, 4-10 in the West Coast Conference. Last year, the Western Oregon finished 10-17 overall and 5-11 in the GNAC.

The game will air in-state on KATU 2 in Portland-Salem, KEZI in Eugene, KDRV in Medford, and KOHD in Bend.

Quintet of Warriors Land on All-Conference Team

Corban concluded the 2007 season with an overall record of 10-9-0, 7-3-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Megan Waunch Corban's women's soccer team had five players named to the 2007 All-Cascade Collegiate Conference team with a pair landing on both the 1st and 2nd team as well as one player earning honorable mention following the Warriors' second place finish in the conference standings this season.

Seniors Sarah Whaley and Megan Waunch were honored as first team members, while junior Karyn Allen and senior Tosha Wilson were placed on the second team.
