June
June "Candy" Kell was murdered in August

(SALEM) - Salem Police this morning have confirmed that a person has been arrested in connection with the murder of a woman whose body was found burning under a Salem bridge last month.

20-year old June "Candy" Kell's body was found by a Salem Police officer burning under the 13st Street bridge August 28th.

Philip Michael Florek

Marion County Prosecutor Jodie Bureta says the man facing a Marion County Grand Jury indictment over Miss Kell's death is identified as 26-year old Philip Michael Florek. He faces charges of murder, abuse of a corpse and failure to register as a sex offender.

An autopsy was conducted by Dr. Lewman of the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office on August 29th. The cause of death was determined at that time to be blunt force trauma.

In Oregon, a conviction for Murder carries a life sentence with a minimum of 25 years in prison.

Officials in Chicoppee County, Massachusetts say he is being held in that state on unrelated charges. They expect to extradite him back to Oregon to face charges.

Further information will be released as it becomes available. Anyone having additional information about this case is asked to contact Detective Jamie Vasas at 503-588-6050 x7153 or Detective Jeff Staples x 7152.

You guys are doing okay - the Statesman Journal managed to promote Sergeant Birr to Lt. without checking with anybody first.

The Editor September 27, 2006 10:14 pm (Pacific time)

An earlier statement in the story attributed information to Salem Police Sgt. Birr, it was replaced with updated information from the DA's office. Thank you.

Joel Walker September 27, 2006 11:41 am (Pacific time)

The Sergeant's name is "Birr." KGW also spelled it wrong.
