(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - As promised, President George W. Bush vetoed the State Children’s Health Insurance Program legislation that has been the focus of a great deal of debate in recent days. Bush vetoed the legislation at 10:00 AM.

SCHIP is a joint federal-state program that provides health care coverage to low-income children.

The President's Press Secretary Dana Perino hinted to reporters that Bush is open to negotiations with Democrats and other supporters of the program, but he wants them to get back to the program's original intent.

Senator Gordon H. Smith (R-OR) reacted to the statement today in response to the president’s veto of legislation to reauthorize the SCHIP.

"I believe this is an irresponsible use of the veto pen," said Senator Smith. "I hope the House can garner enough votes to override the President."

Smith is not the only Republican breaking ranks with the GOP over the proposal, NPR is reporting that President Bush's veto of children's health legislation is causing problems for vulnerable Republicans in Congress, saying they are fearful of being on the wrong side of a very popular issue.

The proposal would add $35 billion to the State Children's Health Insurance Program.

T-O: For the record, 45 House GOP have already abandoned their President--inescapably their own !-- on this measure, 25 more than dissident leader had expected. Possibility of veto/override causing conniption fits in WH, well before actual action. Yr word to Congressional members might swing the thing, so speak UP and OUT...if you really wise to realities, you will seek vote FOR SCHIP -- in support of children, even more essential than any possible actions "supporting troops" in Iraq war sold by fraud and fought for oil and empire.

"Wyden is not the only Republican breaking ranks..." This should be Smith, not Wyden!

What a lot of lost money and energy our lame Congress spends chasing their tails. Too bad there is no answer to the unending dilemma. It's like a "plan to fail". Do they think anyone really thinks they care about healthy kids when they know their resolution has no hope? Why spin in circles like this? How everyone around the world must admire us...NOT!

Little Bush could do to increase the democratic majorities in House and Senate (plus state races) than veto this. Shrub shoots his party in the foot more than Cheney shoots his friends in the face! LOL Ah well...
