Sex and Tragedy: Saga of Britney Spears

She's facing a number of legal and personal issues that could lead to jail, and she loses custody of her kids today.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Britney Spears will lose custody of her two children today at noon. It is the latest bad news for the young pop star whose life continues to illustrate the complexities that often accompany child stardom.

Spears wasn't a child star in the traditional sense, but she was only 17 when she reached #1 on the U.S. pop music charts with her 1999 debut album, "Baby One More Time." Today she is in trouble over statements made by one of her former bodyguards who alleged that she used drugs in front of her kids, 2-year old Sean Preston and 1-year old Jayden James.

25-year old Britney Spears is worth an estimated $100 million. She owns property in Malibu, California, Orlando, Florida and she owns a Louisiana forest.

But the things that are part of her regular life, as a person and as a human being, are being taken away from her and critics say her ex-husband, former rapper Kevin Federline, is hardly suited to take over the parenting role.

Judge Scott Gordon decided to order Spears to undergo random drug testing over what he called her habitual, frequent and continuous use of controlled substances and alcohol”.

Spears has in recent months been booked over a traffic incident, she is accused of attacking a photographer's car with her umbrella, for which she apologized, "I was preparing my character for a role in a movie where the husband never plays his part so they switch places accidentally. I take all my roles very seriously and got a little carried away. Unfortunately I didn't get the part."

She has also shaved her head which is nothing new in the pop singer world, but she apparently did it to show defiance toward her mother, reports say.

But it all really came to a head during the recent MTV Video Music Awards. That is when Britney Spears apparently forget both the words to her “comeback” song, she also missed some of the dance steps.

This prompted the host of the show, Sarah Silverman, to ridicule Spears live on air. “Wasn’t that incredible?” Silverman said. “Britney Spears, everyone. Wow. She is amazing. She is 25 years old and she has already accomplished everything she’s going to accomplish in her life. It’s mind-blowing.”

That lashing continued the next day on TV talk shows. While many vent their ire toward this young diva who took the world by storm, it seems to many, a tragedy in the making. It has to be difficult when a person's largest fan base is not old enough to vote, and entertainment reporters chew a person up and spit them out the other side.

Spears' spiraling life has been excessive by all counts, but she had the world at her feet at a very young age. Paparazzi rarely leave her alone, not that they should, but her outbreaks are not that inconsistent from that of other stars who tire of being photographed.

On a brighter note, Spears’ first new album in four years is going to be released next month.
