Jun-28-2013 15:02TweetFollow @OregonNews Thammasat University: Withdraw Honorary Doctorate Degree for Vietnamese Communist Leader Nguyen Phu TrongLetter by William Gomes Salem-News.comWith all due reference to Thammasat University’s philosophy and the academic values it creates, we strongly call upon the rector and dean of the university to reverse their decision of granting the award to Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong.
(YORK, UK) - Vietnam has made a great deal of progress since the end of the US war there that ended in 1975. The country's economy has surged, educational levels are constantly gaining, and many citizens of this communist country are able to exist peacefully in this post-war era. But the seemingly progressive nation has big problems on its hands when it comes to the basic, general notions of political freedom. To this day, journalists and bloggers who air critical views of the Vietnamese government are charged and convicted and sent to prison. International law protects people from such behaviors, but it isn't observed in Vietnam, instead the country goes about its way much as it has since the early days of the US war in Vietnam, taking stern, even unforgivable actions against its own citizens, many of whom simply seek to raise the bar of justice. What these writers do is shatter the illusion of a free society. World citizens everywhere need to pressure the government of Vietnam, specifically Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong, to change these archaic policies, they must come to understand that the image of Vietnam is being tarnished by these reports, and their success in the world largely hinges on the government's behavior toward media.
