Jan-30-2012 00:01TweetFollow @OregonNews Death Squads in America?by Daniel Johnson, Deputy Executive EditorThe soil for death squads to form and operate within the United States is fertile and very real.
(Calgary, Alberta) - Anyone who has followed events outside the U.S. over the last few decades has heard of the death squads. They have been active as extrajudicial killing forces in countries like Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Peru, Venezuela, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and others elsewhere in the world. Anyone familiar with American history, knows that Death Squads didn't originate, but were certainly active in The land of the free and the home of the brave. After the Civil War the Ku Klux Klan lynched African-Americans, often with the tacit approval of local and state governments in the American south. In the introduction to his book Death Squads in Global Perspective: Murder With Deniability Bruce B. Campbell described the KKK as "one of the first proto-death squads," which "conducted death-squad-like killings and other terrorist acts against recently freed black slaves…and those thought to have collaborated too closely with agents of the victorious federal government engaged in ‘reconstructing’ the recently rebellious South." Campbell noted that the main difference with modern death-squads was that the Ku Klux Klan was associated with elements of a defeated state rather than the ruling governmental entity. "Otherwise, in its murderous intent, links to private elite interests, and covert nature, it very closely resembles modern death squads.” Greg Grandin, in a Salon.com post, accuses the United States of being responsible for training and setting up death squads in South and Central American countries. The School of the Americas, run by the US Army in Georgia, has been accused by many of having trained "500 of the worst human rights abusers in the hemisphere”. And, lest we forget, Osama bin Laden was originally trained and funded by the CIA. The soil for death squads to operate within the United States is fertile and very real. According to the Small Arms Survey 2007 by the Geneva-based Graduate Institute of International Studies the United States has 90 guns for every 100 citizens, making it the most heavily armed society in the world . Canada has about 30 guns per 100 people. Add that much firepower to a disintegrating social fabric, and it is virtually inevitable that some people will decide for themselves, or in cooperation with others of like mind, that the plight of the U.S. is caused by those who think differently—primarily “liberals”. A beginning to this has already been seen with the bombing of abortion clinics and the assassination of doctors who performed abortions. When Jared Lee Loughner tried to assassinate Gabrielle Giffords in Arizona last year, my first thought was that it was beginning. It won’t take much to tip a lot of people over. Ann Coulter, in her book Treason wrote: “Liberals have a preternatural gift for striking a position on the side of treason. You could be talking about Scrabble and they would instantly leap to the anti-American position. Everyone says liberals love America, too. No they don’t. Whenever the nation is under attack, from within or without, liberals side with the enemy. This is their essence….Whether they are defending the Soviet Union or bleating for Saddam Hussein, liberals are always against America….This makes them enemies of America….We won’t have any enemies because we’re going to kill them.” An American bloodbath appears to be increasingly likely every day. ___________________________________
Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Daniel Johnson as a teenager aspired to be a writer. Always a voracious reader, he reads more books in a month than many people read in a lifetime. He also reads 100+ online articles per week. He knew early that in order to be a writer, you have to be a reader. He has always been concerned about fairness in the world and the plight of the underprivileged/underdog. As a professional writer he sold his first paid article in 1974 and, while employed at other jobs, started selling a few pieces in assorted places. Over the next 15 years, Daniel eked out a living as a writer doing, among other things, national writing and both radio and TV broadcasting for the CBC, Maclean’s (the national newsmagazine) and a wide variety of smaller publications. Interweaved throughout this period was soul-killing corporate and public relations writing. It was through the 1960s and 1970s that he got his university experience. In his first year at the University of Calgary, he majored in psychology/mathematics; in his second year he switched to physics/mathematics. He then learned of an independent study program at the University of Lethbridge where he attended the next two years, studying philosophy and economics. In the end he attended university over nine years (four full time) but never qualified for a degree because he didn't have the right number of courses in any particular field. In 1990 he published his first (and so far, only) book: Practical History: A guide to Will and Ariel Durant’s “The Story of Civilization” (Polymath Press, Calgary) Newly appointed as the Deputy Executive Editor in August 2011, he has been writing exclusively for Salem-News.com since March 2009 and, as of February 2012, has published more than 180 stories. 90 guns for every 100 people.... sounds like those other 10 need to step up.

Daniel, maybe what you think is "puffed up," is really more akin to informed patriotism, coupled with our First Amendment rights. This freedom of speech, which you are participating in, is not as strong in Canada:
"National Post editorial board: Canada’s universities, bastions of censorship" "Something is very wrong with Canadian campuses these days. Left-wing students and outside agitators get away with shouting down speakers they disagree with, smashing windows to prevent lecturers they don’t want to hear, even chaining themselves to a stage and screaming “racist, racist, racist” at the University of Waterloo... Student unions routinely decertify pro-life clubs, and administrators frequently cater to the demands of a handful of vocal socialist anarchists.
But when right-of-centre student groups attempt to protest the censorship they face, or demonstrate against leftist speakers and those they believe are hateful, they are met with threats of lawsuits or expulsion by administrators or student unions. The reason for all this is ideological bias: Definitions of free speech, equality and political rights all have been reworked to show favouritism to those espousing leftist ideology. It’s a sad development for institutions that are supposed to be bastions of free inquiry into controversial and diverse ideas." http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2010/11/18/national-post-editorial-board-canadas-universities-bastions-of-censorship/
Reread the last sentence you quote, "It's a sad..." (It's accurate, I read the column) and see if it makes sense. Pretty common for the NP which doesn't have very high standards.

Some of you commenters are quite puffed up with what you think is knowledge. Before going further you should read Paul Balles article and watch the YouTube video which would be funny if it wasn't so embarrassing.
And one suggestion. Before you click the submit button, proofread your comment, and make sure there are no words missing, mispelled words or typos. If you want to be taken seriously, you have to at least look serious.

The Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHISC), formerly the United States Army School of the Americas has been in existence in one form or another since 1946. SOA Watch has been keeping a close eye on WHISC for quite some time. And it seems that the U.S. has been a gun-crazy nation since the beginning of time. Thus, it is quite a leap to cite WHISC and gun ownership in this country to the likelihood of "Death Squads in America?"
If you followed my argument, the possibility of death squads arises from extreme political polarization coupled with an unravelling social fabric. Are you perhaps suggeting that people like Ann Coulter and her intellectual followers are sane?

I will answer the question to Doug. Yes, I personally suggest that canadians are not free..Not even close. But neither is the U.S. even tho an armed society. The difference between the U.S. and canada is, canada has no will nor anything to fight the tyranny. The U.S. does. Yes, they are the minority, but it only took 5% of the population to fight the tyranny back in 1776 and they won. It was temporary, the bankers came in and took over soon after, but the battle continues. There are many in the U.S. that do not want to live under the tyranny of the queen of england like canada does..If daniel would actually do some real research, he would find out that this was all controlled. But Daniel is probably not married and has no kids, lives off social money and is enjoying his last years of life, not caring about anything but himself.
You're arguing from extreme American chauvinism. There are other countries on the planet, you know, who live quite peacefully without a gun under every pillow at night and paranoid conspiracies rattling around in their heads.

Daniel "censorship" in Canada as compared to America? oh no, you are not as free a people as we are. Just google that, and then also show me how you can take irrational acts by loons like the shoter in Arizona, and make a case that "Death Squads" are forming here, outside of "gangs" and the invading "cartels." What you will soon see is a more concentrated organized citizen movement for self-protection to cover our security that the police are under-staffed to do. I feel confident that as the balkanizing which has greatly increased in the last 3 years ( also gun sales are at an all time high while gun crime has been dropping as per FBI stats), that there will be a blowback and violent removal of the above-referenced gangs and enemy cartels. Canada is also experiencing the same thing. In Vancouver BC the Asian gangs have been growing very quickly that soon the military will be called to assist the police in the open. They are already providing training and logistical support. The U.S. military is also providing guidance. Where you live, Alberta, it is relatively safe because of a more conservative no-nonsense population. Funny that Ann Coulter was denied the chance to speak at one of your colleges there because of the violent liberals she had written/spoken about. So obviously it is the liberal mentality that pushes for censorship. They don't like different opinions so they try to quash them. They may stop them for a while, but ultimately the facts come out. It's fun to watch their pathetic dance. They like little children, thing everyone but them is grossly misinformed and stupid. That's why conservative common sense and collective wisdom always prevails.
It's interesting that you described the common American mentality: They think "everyone but them is grossly misinformed and stupid."

Dan that came to an abrupt halt when the deacons for peace and justice armed themselves and organized against the KKK and the local law enforcement . Great example of why an armed society is a free society. It aint safe ,but there is a price for liberty. Peace
Doug: Canada is not an "armed society". Would you suggest that we are not "free"? Another adage of gun-people is "An armed society is a polite society." Canada is one of the most polite societies in the world. How does that follow?

You seem to be missing the point of 9 guns for every 10 citizens. Pretty hard to kill the general population when they are shooting back!
