Burke-Sivers to lecture on 'Resurrecting the Black Family' at University of Portland

Burke-Sivers was recently cited by Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski for his leadership and years of service to the state, following completion of a two-year term as chair of Oregon's Board on Public Safety Standards and Training.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - "Resurrecting the Black Family" is the title of an upcoming lecture by Harold Burke-Sivers, a deacon and public safety director of the University of Portland.

The lecture is set for 4:00 PM Monday, February 9th in Room 163 of Buckley Center on campus, 5000 N. Willamette Blvd., and is free and open to the public.

Burke-Sivers gives an annual lecture during Black History month and will address the impact of welfare on the independence of the black family. He will give his personal perspective, providing insights to the issues and challenges to be tackled to restore the upward mobility and dignity of these families.

Previous lectures by Burke-Sivers include "From Slave to Priest: The Life and Legacy of Fr. Augustine Tolton" and "How Firm a Foundation: Theological and Ideological Perspective on the Contemporary Black Family."

Deacon Burke-Sivers is a Benedictine Oblate of Mt. Angel Abbey and an associate member of the Fellowship of Catholic Scholars. He is active in giving lectures, retreats, and seminars on college campuses, and at workshops and conferences both nationally and internationally.
