(CLACKAMAS, Ore.) - A report of a ‘man with a gun call' in Clackamas led to a deadly police shooting Saturday night at the Twin Creek Apartments, 11500 SE Sunnyside Road, in Clackamas. The report of a domestic disturbance was received by dispatchers at approximately 11:00 PM. Jim Strovink with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office says patrol units responded to the area where they found the suspect in a vehicle leaving the area. "This suspect vehicle proceeded eastbound from the apartment complex while driving erratically and failing to yield to the emergency overhead lights activated by the pursuing Clackamas County Patrol units," Strovink said. "Ultimately, this suspect vehicle made an abrupt evasive maneuver and came to an erratic stop in the parking lot of the Sunrise Middle School, located at 14331 SE 132nd, in Clackamas." Strovink says multiple Clackamas County Sheriff patrol personnel, including a canine unit, were on scene within minutes, announcing commands to the suspect to comply. "Unfortunately, this armed subject failed to comply with these law enforcement commands being announced." Strovink says the 31-year old, lone male adult suspect failed to comply with these Deputy Sheriff commands and brandished a handgun, "in a life-threatening fashion – and was subsequently shot and killed by one of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Deputies." Reportedly, only one Deputy Sheriff discharged his weapon in response to this armed threat. American Medical Response was called in, but Strovink says the subject died at the scene. He added that no Clackamas County Sheriff's Office personnel were injured during this ordeal. Members of the Clackamas County Inter-Agency Crime Team; the Clackamas County District Attorneys Office; the Clackamas County Deputy Medical Examiners Office and the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit responded to conduct this ongoing investigation. Strovink says that in accordance with Clackamas County Sheriff's Office policy and procedures: The directly involved Clackamas County Sheriff's Deputy will be placed on paid Administrative Leave during the course of this Clackamas County Inter-Agency Crime Team investigation. The name of the involved Clackamas County Deputy Sheriff will be released in the next few days. Strovink said, "Preliminary information has been received that indicates, tragically, the deceased had made at least three prior suicide attempts in the past. In addition, the deceased had been transported as recently as January 22nd, by a Clackamas County Sheriff's Deputy, to a local Portland Hospital for a similar mental health related issue." The name of the deceased will be made public as soon as all appropriate notifications have been completed. It is also anticipated an autopsy will be performed by the Oregon State Medical Examiners Office promptly.
