PTSD Therapy: Talk it Out: Blatherskite
Grey's Anatomy Shrink Bombs Again

Don’t the script writers know that PTSD is the biggest, worst psychological problem of returning PTSD vets, whether they were carrying a musket or a scalpel?

(MOLALLA, Ore.) - I have the greatest respect for the TV Show Grey's Anatomy. The blood and guts of training to become a surgeon is realistic and the overall attrition rate is far greater than the general public can conceive. But even then, some doctors do get through these minefields (read mindfields) that probably shouldn’t have.

The general reader will know what I am talking about. Some doctors believe they can effectively walk on water and on underlings, and the term Primadonna is too close to the truth.

You know some of these also:

As a PTSD victim myself, I am particularly offended by the therapeutic approach of the lady psychiatrist who is depicted on the show. It even seems the show's actors feel the same way.

I have already written and posted one article about this and I detect some script producing shenanigans. (see: PTSD and Psychosis Among Army Psychiatrists - Dr. Phillip Leveque Salem-News.com) Dr. Owen Hunt, a recently returned battle casualty surgeon, has come to the show. If anybody wants to know anything about battle casualties, just read the papers or listen to TV news. We have about 30 thousand extremely disabled veterans from Improvised Explosive Devices in the current wars.

These IED's are usually bombs weighing several hundred pounds. They can demolish a Humvee and everything in it, and usually cause severe damage to the fighters - of an almost unbelievable nature. So much so that their survival is miraculous, but they mentally survive with the most horrible of physical damage, and usually with PTSD as well.

Dr. Owen Hunt was a surgeon putting the pieces of these fighters back together. The attitude of the show's shrink seems to be “he wasn’t a fighter being shot at so how could he possibly have PTSD” or alternatively “If he talks about these PTSD demons in detail, he will get over his PTSD”.

I’m not sure if psychiatrists taking care of PTSD have figured out the false reasoning above, but the junior grade psychologists and social workers etc. etc. etc., do not seem to have a clue about PTSD causation and victims.

What I would like to tell these PTSD therapists, is to think of absolutely the most horrible series of events in their lives and then multiply that about ten times, and then go to a therapeutic shrink who demands that you speak about it repeatedly in minute detail.

Don’t these SHRINKS know if our PTSD experiences were of severity greater than 5 out of a possible 10, we can’t talk about them without breaking down - and who wants to do that in the presence of someone who hasn’t a clue what we are talking about.

Dr. Hunt’s SHRINK seems to be demanding that he fess up to his PTSD problems - and then he will be alright and have a satisfactory and loving relationship with his lady friend.

Don’t the script writers know that PTSD is the biggest, worst psychological problem of returning PTSD vets, whether they were carrying a rifle or a scalpel? The medics are really catching hell in those wars, probably worse than the fighters, with their blown-up bodies.

SCRIPT WRITERS SHIFT GEARS!

Right on uncle Phil. That's Hollywood for you though.

What started out as a funny, romantic, easy-going show focusing on McDreamy, McSteamy and other quirky characters like Christina soon became a circus of crazy and dead people and other general nonsense that totally changes the nature of the show.show

Nice one Dr. Leveque, why don't people think about this? It is like a cruel joke with no end in site. Thank you for your seriously helpful writings. You have a big fan club, but then you already know that... Best to you sir.
