Slutwalks: the Most Important Trend Since Women's Suffrage Movement

(MOLALLA, Ore.) - I cannot say that I was surprised to read about Slutwalk in The Nation magazine a couple of weeks ago and I wrote Sluts, Slutwalk and Studs for Salem-News.com in effect congratulating the sluts, sirens or nymphs on their wakeup.

I also looked up Slutwalk on my computer and discovered that there were Slutwalks on every continent except Antarctica, apparently there are no scantily dressed sluts down there. The computer indicated about 125 Slutwalks all over the world. One story posted that he/she would believe it when they saw one scheduled for Saudi Arabia. There was one in India which is not that far away.

I read about the first one in Toronto, Canada which had about 3000 Slut protesters and a similar number in New York City. When it came to my own town, Portland, Oregon there were only about 400 protesters. This was really strange, Seattle, Washington, close by, also had about 3000. I cannot understand the luke warm showing in Oregon.

I decided to compare this with The Women’s Right to Vote Movement which started about 1840 but was not made legal by Congress until 1920. I am aware of the bra burning and other demonstrations of the late 60’s (?).

I searched Women’s Suffrage (voting) Victory for comparison and really got some revelations which I will pass on.

The opposition argued that “most women didn’t want to vote and they were not qualified.” Most men wanted to keep them pregnant, barefooted and in the kitchen.

This brought about a response in 1915 by Alice Duer Miller who wrote:

WHY WE DON’T WANT MEN TO VOTE

1. Because man’s place is in the Army.
2. Because no really manly man wants to settle any question otherwise than by fighting about it.
3. Because if men should adopt peaceable methods women will no longer look up to them.
4. Because men will loose their charm if they step out of their natural sphere and interest themselves in other matters than feats of arms, uniforms and drums.
5. Because men are too emotional to vote. Their conduct at baseball games and political conventions shows this, while their innate tendency to appeal to force renders them unfit for government.

Today’s Congressional activities certainly match the above. Getting back to the Slutwalks, when are you gals going to get a referendum requiring severe penalties for the rapists. You are going in the right direction!!
