Flood Risk in Oregon Increases Due to Worse-than-Normal Fire Season

The upcoming rains may be another challenge for many.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon-fires Areas in Oregon downstream of wildfires are at greater risk for flooding this year, and authorities are urging home and business owner in affected areas to purchase flood insurance.

"Fires have increased flood potential downstream from burned areas and home and business owners in those areas should look into purchasing flood insurance before the rainy season begins," said Christine Shirley, National Flood Insurance Coordinator (NFIPC) for ODLC.

One Dead, 23 Rescued after Footbridge Collapses

Rescuers worked for several hours to assist the stranded people across the river.

(MOUNT HOOD NATIONAL FOREST ) - Sandy River at Ramona Falls A thunderstorm with heavy rain led to a flash flood of the Sandy River at Ramona Falls Tuesday afternoon washed out a footbridge that claimed the life of one man, and left 23 others to be rescued.

When rescuers arrived at Ramona Falls, they found several people on the other side of the river and unable to cross due to the high water. There was no sign of the man who was on the bridge when it collapsed.

Two Lightning Fires Strike Overnight, NWS Issues Red Flag Warning

The National Weather Service has issued several Red Flag Warnings throughout Oregon Monday night for possible abundant lightning strikes.

(LEBANON, Ore. ) - Lightning Fires Oregon The Lebanon Fire Department responded to a lightning caused grass fire at 9:18 p.m. Sunday night at 32843 Sand Ridge Road.

While on the way to the fire, one of the engines discovered a newly ignited fire at 36159 Airport Road in Lebanon.

Hawaii Prepares for Duel Hurricane Punch

Hawaii's schools would be closed on Friday, but authorities planned to keep airports open so planes could land in an emergency, even as some airlines canceled flights, officials said.

(HILO, Hawaii) - Hawaii Hurricanes Hawaii braced for a one-two punch from a pair of major storms barreling toward the archipelago on Thursday, with Hurricane Iselle leading the way bringing high winds and heavy surf as Hurricane Julio gathered steam behind it, U.S. officials said.

Wind shook palm trees on Hawaii's Big Island and caused white caps to form off the coast as Iselle approached on Thursday afternoon rated a Category 1 hurricane, even with the eye of the storm still about 150 miles east of the town of Hilo.

Salem, Willamette Valley Wild Weather Gives Way to Heat

Temperatures in Salem and the mid-Willamette valley are expected to climb back into the 90's on Monday.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Salem Oregon Lightning Salem and most parts of Oregon, was greeted Sunday morning by thunderstorms, with lightning and booming thunder, that later in the day produced small hail and gusty winds, but has now worked it's way out of the state giving way to warmer temperatures again.

The thunderstorms did knockout some power in various locations of the state for a short time, and those visiting the Marion County Fair sought cover as the fast moving thunderstorms rolled through the mid-Willamette Valley.
