(SALEM, Ore. ) - As Salem-News.com was first to report, a four alarm grass fire burned quickly through dry brush and trees just west of Salem Wednesday, off Highway 22 between Doaks Ferry Road NW and College Drive NW.

Firefighters from Salem, Keizer, Marion and Polk Counties fought the blaze, which was called in at 10:42 a.m., as it climbed up steep hills and into ravines, fueled by dry vegetation and moved around by light winds.

Salem Deputy Fire Marshal Laird Case said at least two homes in the area were evacuated due to the blaze. Firefighters were able to stop the blaze before it damaged any homes.

One of the toughest parts in fighting the fire was it's location was in a non hydrant area, and water had to be brought in to replenish engines and grass fire rigs fighting the fire.

Westbound traffic on Highway 22 was down to one lane, and motorist should slow down if traveling in the area as fire equipment is still in the area mopping up hot spots. ODOT and Oregon State Police were on scene as well to help with traffic.

Fire officials say nobody was hurt or injured, and no homes were damaged during the fire. Heat from the fire and outdoor temperatures into the mid 80's did take it's toll on firefighters, but they were quickly replenished with water and energy snacks as needed.

Reports into Salem-News.com said the blaze was started by accident by an ODOT crew working with power tools in the area.

However, Salem Fire Investigators were not able at this time to say what caused the blaze to begin.
