We Were There and We Cared

At a gathering of war reporters in 1995, Peter Arnett summed up their shared experience in one sentence: "We were there and we cared." Not one of the armchair critics who spend so much time berating "the media" can say that.

(CHAPEL HILL, N.C.) - Salem-News.com Just behind the colonnade above the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers and down the hill from the memorial to those who went down with the Maine, a group of old war correspondents awkwardly assembled at Arlington Cemetery recently to pay tribute to our own.

And here we stood trying to make some sense of what we'd done, especially in light of all those who never returned.

Anyone who appreciates the sacrifices of U.S. combat troops should read this.

(SALEM, Ore.) - A U.S. frontline combat soldier on patrol in Afghanistan Far too little information exists for American combat veterans who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, commonly referred to as PTSD.

When Did we Stop Caring About Civilian Deaths?

The mere monitoring of bloody conflict assumes precedence over human suffering.

(LONDON) - A group of children killed by Israel during the recent attacks on Gaza I wonder if we are "normalizing" war. It's not just that Israel has yet again got away with the killing of hundreds of children in Gaza.

And after its own foreign minister said that Israel's army had been allowed to "go wild" there, it seems to bear out my own contention that the Israeli "Defence Force" is as much a rabble as all the other armies in the region. But we seem to have lost the sense of immorality that should accompany conflict and violence.

Veterans For Change Demands Accountability for Those Who Served

They want Congress to amend the “The Veterans' Benefits Improvement Act of 2008” to speed up the update of the Disability Rating Schedule and several other sections of the law, as it is apparent that the VA has stalled these updates for years

(GARDEN GROVE) - Salem-News.com The small but vocal group Veterans-for-Change released a letter today calling for new legislation in the 111th Congress. The group's Jim Davis, says their request is based on what he calls the obvious fact, that while billions may be spent on war, on bailouts, and economic stimuli, the U.S. Government cannot appropriate sufficient funding to care for Veterans and Widows of Veterans disabled by their President.

The group hits on recent events horrendously dismissed by the Department of Veteran Affairs such as admitting they didn’t check their computer programs and change them to comply with legislation, thus causing monies to be erroneously collected from the widows of Veterans at the worst possible time, the moment of their deaths.
