Sri Lanka`s Shavendra Silva Removed from UN Group

Silva was a top military commander.

(GENEVA) - Sri Lanka’s deputy U.N. ambassador has been dropped from a group advising the Secretary-General on payment to troops participating in peacekeeping operations.

According to the report, Louise Frechette, said she had advised Major General Shavendra Silva “that his participation is not appropriate or helpful.”

G.L. Peiris Dropped from UNHRC Speakers` List

(GENEVA) - Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Prof. Gamini Lakshman Peiris, who arrived in Geneva two days ago, has been dropped from the speakers' list at the high level segment of 19th session of the UNHRC.

A week ago UNHRC extranet published Mr. Peiris as the speaker from Sri Lanka at the high level segment. By yesterday (Feb. 21), however, Minister of Plantation Industries, Mahinda Samarasinghe has replaced Minister G.L. Peiris.

“Aananthi” (not her real name), the wife of one of the disappeared, told Human Rights Watch that she saw the army load the priest and the LTTE members on to a bus and drive them away.
