Human Rights Ambassador Asked to Protect, Promote and Fulfill the Human Right to Adequate Housing

India castes thousands of its poorest to the street.

(YORK, UK) - Shri Jagadish Shettar Human Rights Ambassador William Nicholas Gomes asks India to observe national and international law in respecting, protecting, promoting and fulfilling the human right to adequate housing.

1,200 homes were bulldozed, and 5,000 slum dwellers evicted from already-impoverished Koramangala in a recent four-day, weekend operation. Several hundred police officers used sticks to evict people and leave them in a perilous state with no access to clean water, no toilets, and no roof over their heads.

(CALGARY, Alberta) - Salem-News.com Why are so many people in our society poor? Because they’re animals. And because they’re animals, it’s difficult, if not impossible, for them to escape from their lives of deprivation and degradation. Political scientist and social activist Francis Fox Piven summarized the plight of the poor and working poor:

Some of the aged, the disabled, the insane, and others who are of no use as workers are left on the relief rolls, and their treatment is so degrading and punitive as to instill in the laboring masses a fear of the fate that awaits them should they relax into beggary and pauperism.”

India Tops the World in Under-5 Deaths

According to an estimate, about one third of world’s poor lived in India.

(RENO,NV) - Starving children in India India is top in the world for under-five deaths at 1.7 million, which is 24% of the share of total number of such deaths, according to a new UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) report.

Under-5 mortality rate of India was 61 in 2011, where neonatal causes, followed by pneumonia were the highest cause of such deaths.

(LONDON) - Squatters protest in the UK So, they've finally done it. They finally criminalised squatting. On Saturday, it became a criminal offence, with it a penalty of up to six months in jail or a £5000 fine, to trespass in a residential property, under section 144 of Legal Aid Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act (LASPO).

Successive governments have made overtures, initiated clumsy attempts, but all have stopped short of actually criminalising the homeless.

Oregon Is Only State with Improved Health Coverage, but Poverty Rises and Income Flatlines

(SILVERTON, OR) - Oregon map OCPP has prepared a two-page fact sheet (PDF) summarizing key Oregon numbers contained in today's release of the U.S. Census Bureau's Current Population Survey (CPS).

The survey data for 2010-11 showed that Oregon experienced a rise in poverty, a rise in child poverty and stagnation of income for the typical Oregon household.
