Greetings from Rashtriya Garima Abhiyan – Jan Sahas!!
'Manual Scavenging' is a gross human right violation under various legislation and International human rights laws.
To mention a few, Article 17 of constitution of India, Protection of Civil Rights Act 1955, Bonded Labour Abolition Act 1976, The Employment of Manual Scavengers and Dry latrines construction (Prohibition) Act 1993, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (prevention of atrocities) Act 1989. In recent European parliament session, resolution was pass on caste discrimination in India, also highlighted the inhuman practice of manual scavenging.
On 3rd September 2012, “The Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and Their Rehabilitation Bill, 2012" has been introduced in the Lok Sabha. As it awaits discussion, we put forth our recommendation and demand in the bill.
Thats why we started 10000 km, National March Maila Mukti Yatra and a petition through Rashtriya Garima Abhiyan on Change.org asking Prime Minister of India, Shri. Manmohan Singh to take action against this inhuman slavery and it's time to eliminate this practice.
We are determined to fight and raise our voice against this inhuman practice until we realize our demands. We also urge/appeal to the larger society to join your hands with us in eradicating Manual Scavenging practice from India. We are tired of promised. We need proper rehabilitation of community and complete eradication of practice. We need immediate action.
