Vampires in Afghanistan? Soldiers Say It`s True

"They come out at night, sometimes people come up missing, especially kids. They even pull their animals inside when the vampires are out." - Soldier at Bagram, Afghanistan

(SALEM, Ore.) - American soldiers preparing for a mission in Afghanistan before dawn During my two months on assignment in the Afghanistan combat theater last winter, I covered all kinds of military operations for Salem-News.com and Oregon's KPTV FOX-12. While I was there I spent time on forward combat bases, I went on infantry foot patrols, flew in helicopters, and witnessed levels of disparity that were hard to imagine.

But the only time I thought I was going to vomit in that faraway land was when a very strange American soldier found it necessary to tell me about the Afghan vampires. Call it a coincidence, maybe it was the coffee, I will never know for sure, but twenty minutes with this guy sent me running for the men's room.

Ghosts and Haunted Places in Oregon and Beyond

Whatever the truth about ghosts and haunted houses may be, there are a startling number of similarities in the stories.

(SALEM, Ore.) - A Ghost Hovering Near Tim King The state of Oregon holds the title to an extraordinary number of ghost stories and haunted places. The pioneer settlers appear to have left behind more than they planned to, and in some cases, the same is true for Native Americans.

Life was hard in old Oregon, as it was for pioneers throughout the west. But Oregon may have offered even more difficulties and challenges than other early settlements, as it seems more than the average number of people left this world with "unfinished business", which seems to be the primary factor in why people become ghosts in the first place when they die.

Ghost Hunting: An Increasingly Popular Interest

Real or not real? Ghosts are something some people believe exist, others scoff at the notion. But have they ever had to live in a haunted house?

(SALEM, Ore.) - Bush impeachment protestors "Ghosthunting" has an undeniable appeal as a word, but it probably isn't the best description for those who investigate the undead in earnest.

If in fact ghosts do exist, then they are the remnant of a living, breathing person, who possessed thoughts and feelings and need and demands. Alive or dead, they deserve our respect, and that often is the best tool and basis of understanding for a person who investigates haunted locations.

Haunted Oregon Radio Station Still Restless Decades Later

Spirits that disturb the former radio station seem to have only become more troublesome with time.

(McMINNVILLE) - Tim King in 1991 as the News Director of KLYC Ghosthunting first became an interest of mine in 1991 when I was the News Director of KLYC AM 1260 FM Radio in McMinnville, Oregon. Gathering, writing and delivering the news in this rural farming community was an interesting gig, though I think I blew the farmers minds more than once with my selection of material.

Maybe they weren't used to hearing about how ghosts and haunted buildings are very prominent in Oregon's Willamette Valley. For that matter, I wasn't either. As it turned out, I gained more of an education in a short time than I expected to, and it was a good basis for work I would continuing doing.

Flashback - One Halloween Night on the Oregon Coast

“You have no idea what you are getting yourself into. Even if you are armed, these people can do things that you can’t deal with.” - New York criminologist

(LINCOLN CITY) - Lake at night When I was in my first reporting job I was busy learning everything I possibly could about reporting, anchoring, and the thousands of things that go along with conveying information for a living.

That first job was at a cable TV station in Lincoln City, Oregon. The station is long gone but the spirit of it lives on in the hearts of those of us who were a part of it, and the memory of the night we tried to videotape devil worshippers is clear as day.
