Spring Break Means Plenty of Whale Activities on Central Oregon Coast

Newport has three official whale watching sites, a few others close by, a plethora of whale watch vantage points and cruises, and two aquarium centers with loads of whale information.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - whale watching group To the whales passing by, the Oregon coast is probably just a pit stop for a few million bites of phytoplankton on the way to the Bering Sea. But to thousands of visitors to the area, the Oregon coast is the biggest panoramic theater to nature’s gargantuan cetacean show.

It’s the Spring Whale Watch Week along the Oregon coast, happening March 24th – 31st, and the central Oregon coast town of Newport is the ticket to some of the best seats in the house.

Collision With a Farm Vehicle Kills Tillamook Man

Nye Beach Turns Murder Into a Festival of Fun, March 10th and 11th

(NEWPORT, OR.) - Nye Beach murder mystery In the second weekend of March, someone in the coastal village of Nye Beach will be murdered. And locals will make a weekend out of it. It’s called the Nye Beach Murder Mystery Weekend, and it’s growing by leaps and bounds in this historic neighborhood of the Oregon coast resort town of Newport.

It happens March 10th and 11th, bringing a unique combination of time travel, prizes, role-playing and sleuthing to this seaside charmer. With the waves murmuring in the distance, a dozen or so murder suspects will be milling about these streets and shops as a few hundred members of the public try and discover who-done-it.

Magnitude 5.3 Earthquake Reported off Oregon Coast

A 4.5 magnitude quake hit the same area on Sunday.

(BANDON) - Oregon Coast A magnitude 5.3 earthquake rattled off the Oregon coast Wednesday.

The USGS says the quake struck at 2:12 PM, 151 miles WNW of the town of Bandon.

The quake had a depth of 3.7 miles.

Three Earthquakes Rattle Off Oregon Coast

No damage or injuries were reported.

(GOLD BEACH) - Salem-News.com Three light earthquakes shook off the Oregon Coast last week according to the USGS.

The first one occurred on Wednesday at 7:24 AM.

The 4.4 magnitude quake was located 118 miles west of Gold Beach.

The next quake struck just minutes later at 7:38 AM.

The History of Oregon`s Tallest Lighthouse; Yaquina Head

The Cape Foulweather Lighthouse is one of the most-visited on the west coast, with over 400,000 visitors each year.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - lighthouse Yaquina Head, also known as Cape Foulweather Lighthouse It took approximately one year, and over 370,000 bricks from San Francisco, to construct Oregon's tallest lighthouse Yaquina Head, also known as Cape Foulweather Lighthouse.

The 93 foot tower, double walled for insulation and dampness protection, is Oregon's tallest, and is located on a narrow point of land jutting due west into the Pacific Ocean north of Newport, at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area.

There was trouble with the lighthouse from the very beginning.

California Sea Lions in Oregon Succumbing to Bacterial Disease

(NEWPORT) - sea lions in Newport, Oregon The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Oregon State University is working with the Oregon Marine Mammal Stranding Network to test California sea lions for leptospirosis, a bacterial disease that can infect numerous animals, including humans.

Rare Fish Washes Ashore Along Oregon Coast

A longnose skate is what is called a benthic fish, meaning it spends most of its time on the ocean floor.

(SEASIDE) - Longnose Skate For the second time in three months, staff at the Seaside Aquarium have rescued a live fish that washed ashore at Seaside.

On Friday, a group of concerned citizens discovered something flopping around in the surf at Sunset Beach, just north of Seaside.

The creature turned out to be a longnose skate -- which was not only alive, but was an extraordinary find because this species usually lives well below the ocean surface.
