Debris Found on Oregon Beach Could Have Cultural Significance in Japan

Officials are waiting on word from the Consular Office of Japan.

(OCEANSIDE, OR) - Oceanside Japan earthquake debris Oregon state park staff removed an unusual piece of debris from the ocean shore near Oceanside in Tillamook County.

The 16' long object's shape resembles the top, horizontal part of a type of free-standing arch found in Japan called a torii - used to mark the entrance of a sacred site.

PHOTOS: Derelict Japanese Boat Found and Removed from Oregon Beach

Vessel with Japanese writing was located at Muriel Ponsler Memorial Wayside, north of Florence.

(FLORENCE, OR) - Derelict boat from Japan on Oregon beach A 24' nonmotorized boat was removed from the ocean shore near Muriel Ponsler Wayside north of Florence at 7 p.m., Mar. 14, 2013. Leisure Excavating from Florence transported it to a local landfill.

No pollution or other hazardous materials were detected, but there was marine life clinging to the debris.

Body of Missing Jet Skier Found in Ocean Off Depoe Bay

Coast Guard personnel retrieved the man's body about 7:30 a.m.

(LINCOLN CITY) - Lincoln City Oregon State Police, the State Medical Examiner's Office and Lincoln City Police, are investigating the cause of death of an adult male found early Tuesday morning floating in the ocean off Depoe Bay.

24-year old Daniel Lee Ahlers of Lincoln City was reported missing Monday after he failed to return from jet skiing in the ocean.

OSU, City of Newport Plan for Exhibit Featuring Piece of Tsunami Dock

“The exhibit will be a reminder that the tragedy in Japan could just as easily happen here” - Newport Mayor Mark McConnell

(NEWPORT, OR) - Dock on the beach A section from a huge dock that ripped loose from its moorings in the northern Japanese city of Misawa during the massive earthquake and tsunami in March of 2011 will become part of an exhibit in Newport, Ore.

A piece of the huge structure has been saved and will be on display at Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center by early next year.

Kids from two to eighteen competed in various age divisions with the “Parent with Child” division being the most popular with 18 parent/child teams.
