Hotshots to Train this Week on the Oregon Dunes

(FLORENCE, Ore.) - Hotshot Crew in Action Each spring the Winema Interagency Hotshot Crew travels from their home base in Klamath Falls, Oregon to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area to get in some spring training in preparation for the coming fire season.

This year the crew of elite fire fighters will be on the coast during the week of April 23rd.

The Winema IHC will help with a planned fuels reduction project near the south jetty of the Siuslaw River.

Newborn Seal Pups Cause Disturbance on Oregon Beach

Aquarium officials say this is a perfect example of why beachgoers should not pick up seal pups - besides the fact it's against the law.

(SEASIDE, Ore.) - Sea lion pup on beach Two newborn seals caused a stir Friday morning and further illustrated the necessity for humans to leave them alone.

Both were apparently newborn seals with their umbilical chords still attached, and both were handled by humans - when they should not have been.

Early Friday, a baby seal washed up in Astoria, somewhere on the waterfront.

Governor Directs Advisory Council to Develop State Strategy for Ocean Preservation

Policy will complement efforts to designate Oregon Coast as National Marine Sanctuary.

(SALEM) - pacific city photo Governor Kulongoski instructed the Oregon Ocean Policy Advisory Council in a letter yesterday to devise over the next year a state proposal for a network of marine reserves along the Oregon coastline, in addition to examining efforts to accommodate wave energy production and aquaculture in Oregon.

In December 2005, Governor Kulongoski proposed designating Oregon’s entire coast as a National Marine Sanctuary in a unique federal-state partnership to provide long-term stewardship of the ocean ecosystems.

Police in Oregon Seek Sea Lion Shooter

Investigators say it happened Wednesday around 12:30 PM. They learned of the shooting after a call was placed to a local law enforcement agency, informing them that a sea lion was shot in the area of Coon Island near Gilbert River Boat Ramp.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Injured sea lion The shooting of a federally-protected California sea lion in the Multnomah Channel of the Willamette River is drawing both state and federal resources as police try to determine exactly who is responsible for pulling the trigger.

Two Salem Men Arrested Along Oregon Coast

63-year-old Raymond A. Pries, from Salem, interfered with the investigation by insisting he be arrested as well.

(WALDPORT, Ore.) - Lincoln County Sheriff badge Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested two Salem men early this morning in Waldport.

Lincoln County Sheriff Deputy Lance Cummings says at around 1:00 AM, he observed a 2006 Dodge pickup traveling down the center turn land for several blocks while driving east of U.S. 34 near Broadway Street in Waldport.

Cummings was able to stop the vehicle, and made contact with the driver, 56-year-old Billie Staggs from Salem.

Easter Day Fight at Oregon State Park Lands Salem Man Behind Bars

After shopping in Newport with his ex-wife and son, Marcelino Segrero-Campos agreed to take her home, but instead he drove her to the state park against her will police said.

(DEPOE BAY, Ore. ) - lincoln county badge Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies say they arrested a Salem man after responding to the report of a fight in progress at Rocky Creek State Park in Depoe Bay Easter Day.

Deputy Karl Vertner says he and another deputy responded to the park and found both parties had separated.

Upon further investigation, Vertner says 22-year-old Marcelino Segrero-Campos went to Newport to visit his son and ex-wife for the holiday.

Killer Whales Expected on Central Coast in April

Last year, the killer whales lingered until the middle of July.

(NEWPORT, Ore. BeachConnection.net) - killer whales It’s a little known aspect of whale watching on Oregon’s coast, but the middle of April is also orca season; usually in the Depoe Bay and Newport areas, but often seen from Cascade Head all the way down to Florence.

The killer whales are what are known as “transient” whales, meaning officials don’t know where they come from. They’re also more predatory, living off seals and baby gray whales.

Morris Grover, with the Whale Watch Spoken Here program, says these are smaller and more shark-like in appearance than what are nicknamed the “friendly” whales, which visit here from the San Juan Islands and live on salmon.
