Corps Stresses Safety Around Oregon Coast Jetties

Construction of the jetties began more than 100 years ago to help mariners navigate between the Pacific Ocean and coastal ports, and were never intended for recreational purposes.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The north jetty at the Coquille River. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reminds visitors to the coast that jetties were not constructed for recreation purposes and that they should avoid fishing from, and walking, driving or climbing on these structures because of the potential hazards.

Heceta Head Lighthouse Will Shine Again

Heceta Head Lighthouse's light will shine again Wednesday, after being off more than three months.

(HECETA HEAD, Ore.) - Oregon lighthouse The repairs have been completed on the Heceta Head Lighthouse's lantern rotating system. Lighthouse repair specialists finished replacing worn out friction rollers and bearings in the carriage wheel assembly that rotates the lantern earlier this week.

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department turned off the light February 1st when inspectors warned that rotating the lantern without the repairs could have caused further damage to the carriage assembly and the light.

Two Die in Crash East of Newport

Two more people were injured in the double fatal crash on Highway 20.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Fatal crash A Seal Rock Couple died in a two-vehicle head-on crash Friday afternoon on Highway 20 about twenty miles east of Newport.

Oregon State Police troopers say that around 5:20 p.m. Friday, a 1986 Cadillac De Ville operated by 86-year old Jack Whipple, was westbound on Highway 20 near milepost 20 when, according to witnesses, it began to pass another vehicle.

Salem Family Aborts Coastal Getaway to Find Home Ablaze

The quick actions of Salem firefighters prevented the home from becoming a total loss.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Fire in Salem, Oregon 5-09-09 A Salem family's weekend getaway to the Oregon coast was cut short Friday night, when they received a phone call advising them that their home on Jones Road was on fire.

The family that lives in the residence at 5167 Jones Road SE, turned around and arrived to see their garage severely damaged, but the home, thanks to the quick actions of firefighters, was still still primarily intact.

Oregon Civil Air Patrol Initiates Response to Tsunami Drill

The CAP has performed similar missions around the Mt. Hood area, indicating key points for avalanches, debris flows and other geologic areas of concern.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Oregon CAP Cessna 182 search aircraft Oregon coastal communities are taking part in a simulated tsunami beginning Friday, and the Oregon Civil Air Patrol will be a participant in this unique exercise.

The statewide disaster drill is called Cascade Peril 09. Tom Traver with the Oregon CAP says it deals not only with the tsunami, but with the underlying 9.0 Megaquake that caused it.

Coast Guard Rescues Two from Overturned Vessel near Cape Elizabeth

Using directions provided by the Coast Guard's Rescue 21 system, the helicopter crew was able to locate both men.

(SEATTLE) - Coast Guard helicopter The Coast Guard rescued two fishermen who fell from an overturned fishing vessel near Cape Elizabeth, Ore., Tuesday.

Coast Guard units in Port Angeles, Washington, and Astoria, Oregon, recieved a mayday from the 31-foot fishing vessel, Renee Marie, at 7:20 p.m.

Coast Guard Assists Disabled Vessel off Oregon Coast

There are no reported injuries at this time, and no information as to the cause of the flooding.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Coast Guard helicopter The Coast Guard has responded to the distressed fishing vessel Master Chris after reports that it is taking on water off the Coast of Yaquina Bay, Ore., Sunday.

Motor lifeboats from Depoe Bay and Yaquina Bay, Ore., as well as a rescue helicopter from Northbend, Ore., are on scene with the vessel at this time.

Fatal Crash on Highway 18 Halts Traffic for Hours

Police Investigate Fatal Traffic Crash Highway 18 east of Highway 101

(LINCOLN CITY, Ore.) - Fatal crash near Lincoln City, Oregon 4-4-09 Oregon State Police and the Lincoln County interagency major crash team are continuing the investigation of Saturday afternoon's fatal traffic crash on Highway 18 east of Highway 101.

Troopers say a Langlois-area man died and five others received minor injuries in the crash. The highway re-opened 3 1/2 hours after it happened.

One Man Dies in Crash South of Bandon

The right front passenger in the vehicle, 45-year old Richard Anthony Standiford of Langlois, was transported to Southern Coos General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

(BANDON, Ore.) - Salem-News.com Oregon State Police say a Langlois-area man died Saturday afternoon when the vehicle he was operating crashed into a tree along Highway 101 south of Bandon.

According to OSP Trooper Joshua Young, the fatal crash happened today around 12:12 p.m. as a 2005 Jeep Cherokee sport utility vehicle driven by 74-year old David Lawrence Allen of Langlois, was northbound on Highway 101 near milepost 279.
