Embedded Journalist Tim King Joins Oregon Soldiers in Afghanistan

After a somewhat arduous journey, Reporter/Photojournalist Tim King has joined the 41st Combat Brigade of the National Guard at Camp Phoenix, Afghanistan

(SALEM) - It must have been a long trip, you’re thinking. That’s one way to put it. The morning of Monday, November 6th, the Salem-News.com crew chaperoned Tim to the Portland International Airport and headed for Delta.
We watched as his bags carrying the bullet proof vest and helmet, and his tripod in its duffel bag, were all loaded up on the cart and taken through the baggage shoot. With camera slung over his shoulder and carryon bag in hand, off he went to remove his shoes for the nice lady.

(SALEM) - Salem-News and FOX-12 logos Internet Photojournalist/Reporter Tim King of Salem-News.com will embark for Afghanistan November 8th. While there, Tim will be embedded with the 41st Combat Brigade of the Oregon National Guard at Camp Phoenix at Kabul, Afghanistan. Reports will be posted here on Salem-News.com over the next several weeks, and now the Portland area will also be able to catch Tim's "Dispatches from Afghanistan" on local TV.

It was announced Monday that Tim's reports will be seen exclusively in Portland on KPTV FOX-12.

Oregon National Guard Homecoming In Salem (VIDEO)

Dozens of Oregon soldiers returned from duty in the Middle-East Tuesday, to the joy of their family and friends.

(SALEM) - Oregon mom and daughter that went to war Oregon families welcomed National Guard soldiers home Tuesday after a 14-month deployment in Kuwait. Among those soldiers were two women who share a bond that far exceeds their military commitment. These soldiers say the evening news and daily papers miss their mark in military reporting.

Oregon National Guard Soldiers to Return From Japan this Weekend

Oregon Guardsmen returning from Japan this weekend "stood up" the first sniper training in Japan since WWII.

(SEKIYAMA MANEUVER AREA, Japan) - Various National Guard shots in Japan "You go away. No come in town," 1st Sgt. Robert Hanks said to members of his own Oregon National Guard unit. "We no trust you. Go away."

Those words were the only ones the Soldiers of Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 162nd Infantry could understand when they came upon a mock village during a patrol in the jungles of Japan's Sekiyama Maneuver Area Monday.

Hanks and members of the battalion's mortar section were role-playing rural villagers and, except for a few choice words, were not speaking in English. The hostile attitude, however, was easily understood by the Oregon Soldiers.

Oregon National Guard Breaks Ground for New Facility in Salem

Congresswoman Darlene Hooley is credited with securing just over $6.5 million in federal funds for the project, which the Oregon National Guard has had on the drawing board since 1990.

(SALEM) - Darlene Hooley at groundbreaking The Oregon National Guard held a ground breaking ceremony at their Army Aviation Facility at McNary Field in Salem today, for a new facility to house two of their units.

The new 39,000 square foot facility will be the new home of two Oregon Army National Guard units.

37 Oregon Citizen Soldiers to Return to Oregon From Kuwait Saturday

The company managed casualty reporting theater-wide, and provided technical level expertise over the theater's personnel accounting.

(SALEM) - A daughter embraces her father returning from a previous Oregon National Guard deployment Thirty-seven Oregon National Guard soldiers of the 41st Personnel Services Company, based out of Salem, will return Saturday from a one-year deployment in Kuwait.

The soldiers are expected to arrive at the Portland International Airport on Southwest Airlines Flight 605 at approximately 2:20 PM.

Family members and military officials will greet them at the airport. The soldiers will go through demobilization processing in Salem October 23rd to 24th.

Oregon Guard Contingent Will Travel to Japan

Oregon National Guard citizen soldiers deploy to Japan next week in support of a bilateral exercise with the Japanese army.

(SALEM) - Memebrs of the 2-163 returning from an earlier deployment Approximately 240 members of 2nd Battalion, 162nd Infantry will travel to Sekiyama Maneuver Area, Honshu, Japan, to participate in the annual Orient Shield exercise that concludes Oct. 26th.

The unit, which is headquartered in Eugene, will join Japanese soldiers and U.S. soldiers stationed in Japan to enhance U.S./Japan combat readiness, improve bilateral operations between the two armies, promote professional relationships and good will, and demonstrate U.S. resolve to support security interests of friends and allies in the region.

Oregon Guard Personnel Will Deploy to Southern States to Help Customs

All the soldiers and airmen are volunteers who will deploy under Title 32 in a status called "Active Duty for Special Work." The deployment is federally funded.

(SALEM) - Oregon National Guard soldiers The Oregon National Guard will send 35 more volunteer soldiers and airmen to help U.S. Customs and Border Protection under Operation "Jump Start" in four southern border states, the Oregon Military Department announced Tuesday.

Under Operation Jump Start, the federal government has sought volunteers to help with surveillance, civil engineering projects, administrative support, and training along the border with Mexico. The deployment of Oregon Guard personnel will take place under an agreement Governor Ted Kulongoski concluded with the U.S. Department of Defense in July.

Statement from Oregon National Guard Colonel Cameron Crawford on Fallen Oregon Soldier Brad Lindsey

Oregon Guard Sergeant Brad Lindsey of Tigard died over the weekend in Afghanistan when his Humvee was attacked by Taliban militia. His family released these pictures and complimented the Portland news media for their sensitivity and good ethical treatment of their son's story.

Oregon National Guard Soldier is Killed in Afghanistan

Sgt. Nathaniel Brad Lindsey was part of the military contingent based in Afghanistan until next summer.

(KANDAHAR, Afghanistan) - Flag An Oregon National Guard soldier died after an attack by Taliban militants September 9th in Afghanistan's Zabul province.

Sgt. Nathaniel Brad Lindsey of Troutdale was on patrol with U.S. troops and members of the Afghan National Army when Taliban militants attacked either with improvised explosive devices or rocket propelled grenades, and small arms fire.

The attack took place mid-afternoon on Saturday near the town of Shajoy in Zabul province north of Kandahar province.
