Changes and Improvements for National Sex Offender Website‏

Changes Announced Near the 5-year Anniversary of Dru Sjodin Disappearance.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Sex Offender Website The U.S. Department of Justice today announced improvements to the Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Web site (NSOPW) and a new internet domain name, www.nsopw.gov. The new Web address will replace www.nsopr.gov.

The updated version has a new look, is more user-friendly and provides enhanced search capabilities to locate sex offenders. NSOPW is administered by the Office of Justice Programs' (OJP) Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART).

"NSOPW provides the public with information to protect themselves, their families and their communities from coming into contact with registered sex offenders," said Jeffrey L. Sedgwick, Assistant Attorney General for OJP.

Suspected Online Predator Busted in Clackamas County

Intercept Task Force Arrest Medford Man In Clackamas County For Internet Crimes Involving Female Children‏

(CLACKAMAS, Ore.) - Kelly Ray Rasmussen of Medford as he is taken into custody by members of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office. Police in Clackamas County have arrested a Medford man who they believe is an Online predator. Intercept Task Force Investigators identified 42-year old Kelly Ray Rasmussen of Medford, Oregon as a suspect in several investigations. He was taken into custody Tuesday at 2:00 PM at an unidentified location within Clackamas County.

Detective Jim Strovink, spokesman for the Clackamas Sheriff, says Rasmussen is known to have traveled to Portland, on Monday, and stayed at a downtown Portland hotel. At the time of his arrest, Rasmussen was operating a rented automobile described as a 2008, Chevrolet, Cobalt, 4-door, white in color, with Oregon plates.

Rasmussen's arrest led to law enforcement authorities executing search warrants Tuesday afternoon, seeking items of evidentiary value from Rasmussen, the rented automobile, the Rasmussen residence in Medford, and his place of lodging here in Portland.

OSU Bookstore Online Security Breach Under Investigation

OSU says their Bookstore has hired an outside agency to help with its own investigation of the security breach.

(CORVALLIS, Ore.) - Oregon State Police say they are investigating the theft of personal information from as many as 4,700 online customers of the OSU Bookstore who used credit cards to purchase items.

In March of this year, OSP began investigation into a report that approximately 30 OSU Bookstore customers' personal information may have been compromised following online orders.

Online Scams Target Customers This Tax Season

Consumers need to safeguard personal information and know the warning signs online.

(NEW YORK) - The International Trademark Association (INTA) today alerted consumers to several electronic scams targeting taxpayers and offered tips for protecting personal information online during the 2007 tax filing season.

Currently, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is reporting several electronic scams that are targeting people as they prepare to file their taxes online. These scams include fraudulent emails that read "Audit Alert," "Changes to Tax Law” and "Refund." The success of these schemes relies on the goodwill and recognition that the public associates with a trademark, and criminals use this to lure consumers to their Web sites.
