21st Annual Angel Tree Opportunity-YWCA Salem

(SALEM, Ore.) - YWCA Salem Monday kicks off the YWCA Salem Resource Assistance Program’s 21st annual Angel Tree Opportunity. Last year the Angel Tree helped over 85 households to fully celebrate the holiday season.

Through the kindness and generosity of members of our community 85 angels were collected from the decorated tree in the lobby of the YWCA Salem. Each angel represented a need of a child or an adult and was filled and returned to the YWCA Salem.

Aquarium to Offer Free Admission for Military on Veterans Day

(Newport, Oregon) - An American Alligator is among the animals featured in the Aquarium’s new Swampland exhibit.  Photo by Cindy Hanson The Oregon Coast Aquarium will celebrate Veterans Day by offering free admission for military veterans and active military personnel.

“We’re grateful to those who have served in the military, and we would like to show our appreciation by offering free admission on Veterans Day,” said Carrie Lewis, Aquarium President and CEO. “We feel it’s important to pay tribute to those who have made sacrifices on our behalf.”

Salem Police Department Halloween Dress Rehearsal

We ask the entire community to assist us in making Halloween night safe and enjoyable for everybody

(SALEM, Ore.) - Halloween Pumpkins The Salem Police Department Crime Prevention Unit will host its 5th Annual Halloween Dress Rehearsal on Saturday, October 23, 2010, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the atrium of the Police Department at 555 Liberty St. SE, first floor.

The focus of the event is to have children's costumes ready to wear for a safe evening of Halloween trick-or-treating.
Children and their parents are invited to dress up in their Halloween costume and have it evaluated for safety based on common hazards, such as low visibility (specifically the reflectivity of the costume, as well as the visual limitations due to masks or wigs) and costume fit (length as a tripping hazard).

One story that Tom Zangla of Kecksburg, Pa. recalls each year around this time, happened Easter Sunday in 1969, when a 122mm rocket didn't blow him to smithereens, at his base in Pleiku, Vietnam.
