Independence Day Spillover: No Cause to Shoot Off Collective Mouths

(SALEM, Ore.) - This July 4th the flares are faltering into the vast expanse of the sea. The fallout is everywhere: pure pessimism on extracting ourselves from the BP-generated oil spill engulfing our very national psyches.

Instead of our usual cheers for the Red, White and Blue, we are adrift in miles and miles of mega-goo. The USA seems sunk and the depth of malaise runs further than the human eye can perceive.

The economy remains at low tide. Attempts at seeing through a series of stimuli are only stimulating partisan bickering, now deemed the National Sport of this day and age. But much like the oil itself, no party has hands that are entirely clean. One wonders if the sheen of those armies of lobbyists are gurgling at a faster rate than the leaky spigot of that subterranean oil.

The jolt of joblessness is omnipresent. The work force has depleted and the will of Congress has yet to be completed. Will it take a human hurricane to cast aside the shipwreck of this gridlock-in-action?

Hurricanes remind many of us of those warning flags that spell out the words, M-A-Y-D-A-Y. It may be the 4th of July but that Mayday signal is still appropriate. The windbags in Congress and elsewhere are at full blast! The ebb-and-flow of history is beckoning on our shores!

We can neither afford to bask in the glare of fireworks or to aimlessly shoot off our collective mouths. We are drenched in both oil and the grease of meaningless rhetoric. Let us declare our independence from each, before we sail into the sunset of civilization.
