Oregon Legislature Passes $40 Million Disaster Relief Fund

The intent is to meet the unique needs of Oregon producers, for whom disaster assistance has not typically worked.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon ice storm Monday, during the 2021 second special session, the Oregon Legislature awarded $40 million to this new, one-of-a-kind program to help mitigate economic losses farmers and ranchers sustained because of the compounding natural disasters in 2021, including the ice storm, heat dome, and drought.

Senate Bill 892 that directs the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) to establish a disaster assistance program.

Evacuation by the Numbers: Disaster Preparedness

As fire evacuations are underway, here are some things we should all know

(BANDON, Ore.) - Salem-News.com The recent heat wave in our region has been, at worst, an inconvenience for most of us. Elsewhere in the Northwest there have been all manner of wildland fires resulting, according to one news report, in the loss of over 300 homes. That’s at least 300 families who were ordered to get out and find safety elsewhere.

The need for evacuation is rare in our regio .... But at this writing, several major wildland fires are threatening more homes and scorching thousands of acres of forest land.

President Declares Disaster in Oregon for 2014 Winter Storm

According to the declaration, additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the State and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

(WASHINGTON DC) - The Oregon Office of Emergency Management (OEM) logo The President has declared a disaster declaration for Oregon to help recover from damage caused by the Severe Winter Storm in February 2014. FEMA is providing financial assistance for emergency work, and repairs or replacement of public infrastructure in Benton, Lane, Lincoln and Linn counties.

The majority of the damages were to public utilities as a result of snow, ice, winds and flooding in the affected counties.

(WASHINGTON DC) - Nuclear danger In this edition of Reactor Reax, BBC reports that the US nuclear site fire that shut down the only US underground nuclear waste repository in February 'was preventable'.

The report also cited problems with emergency response and oversight at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), outside Carlsbad, New Mexico. The state's two senators called the findings 'deeply concerning'.

Missing Plane Possibly Located Off Vietnamese Coast

Hong Kong's Air Traffic Control Center reported the debris field was spotted by a passing airliner.

(SALEM) - MH370 has been missing for four days. An aviation Website reports via the Hong Kong Air Traffic Control Center, that a large field of debris has been located at position N9.72 E107.42, about 80 nautical miles southeast of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.

The wreckage was reportedly observed about fifty nautical miles off of Vietnam's southeast coast, in the South China Sea.
