Volunteers Prepare Flags for the Healing Fields

The Field of Flags honors those lost September 11th 2001 and military personel who have died in service.

(SALEM) - Approximately 60 volunteers spent the morning at the Anderson Readiness Center, Oregon Army National Guard preparing the flags to be displayed at the Salem Riverfront Park next week. The goal is to "Raise a Flag for those who have Fallen".

The public is invited to attend any or all of the events scheduled between Sept. 7th - 12th. Volunteers are needed for several of the events as well.

Volunteers will be needed on Thursday, Sept. 7th, 2006 at 10:00 AM to assemble the 9/11 Field. Interested volunteers need to assemble by the Carousel. They will be 4,500 flags in the 9/11 Field.

Friday, Sept. 8th, 2006 at 10:00 AM, members of the different service branches of the military will assemble the "Military Field" honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. This field will be near the Pavilion on the north end of the park. The "military Field will be set up during a dedication ceremony where the names of the fallen will be read as the flags are posted.

Change Wal-Mart, Change America Bus Tour Visits Salem Friday

The WakeUpWalMart.com bus tour visits Portland and Vancouver, Washington Saturday. Salem is home to one “original” Wal-Mart, two Wal-Mart Superstores, and city leaders hope to lure a Wal-Mart distribution center to Salem in the near future.

Volunteers Sought For Albany River Cleanup Event

The event is one of two river cleanups held each year in Albany.

(ALBANY) - Willamette River The City of Albany is sponsoring the annual fall river cleanup event taking place Saturday, September 16th, from 9:00 AM to noon.

Volunteers of all ages and abilities are invited to participate in the cleanup which will focus on removing debris from local rivers and streams, as well as marking city storm drains to prevent water pollution.

Volunteers should dress for the weather and wear sturdy walking shoes.

Community Invited to Salem Recovery Event in Bush’s Pasture Park

(SALEM) - Bush Park “Recovery Rocks” is the theme of a September 16th public event to celebrate the success of people recovering from addictions and mental illness.

The Saturday event is one of many scheduled across the state and nation as part of the 17th annual National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. It will run from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM in Bush’s Pasture Park and is open to people in recovery, their families and all who are interested.

There will be door prizes, children’s activities and snacks. Picnics are encouraged.

Tickets Now Available For Event to Benefit Salem Parks

All proceeds from the Autumn Flavors event will go to the improvement of Salem parks.

(SALEM) - People in a Salem park The Salem Parks Foundation is partnering with South Central Association of Neighbors, or SCAN, to raise funds to benefit Salem parks.

Tickets are now available for the Autumn Flavors event, which will be held on Saturday, September 30th, from 2:00 - 5:00 PM at Willamette Valley Vineyards, 880 Enchanted Way SE, in Turner.

Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door, which includes fine wine, finger foods, great silent auction items as well as an afternoon of entertainment in the high hills of the beautiful Willamette Valley Vineyards.

Olympia Vernon Reads at Friends of the Library Event

(SALEM) - New Hallie Ford Chair Olympia Vernon New Hallie Ford Chair Olympia Vernon will read from her novels Monday, September 18th at 4:30 PM in the Hatfield Room of the Hatfield Library at Willamette University. Light refreshments will be served at 4:15 PM. The reading is free to the public.

Olympia Vernon’s raw and formidable talents are on arresting display in earlier novels, “Eden”and “Logic.” Her third novel, “A Killing in This Town,” is a taut, poetic masterpiece that exhumes a horrific epoch from the annals of the American South.

There is a menace in the woods of Bullock County, Miss., and not only for the black man destined to be lynched when a white boy comes of age. The white men who work at the Pauer Plant are in danger, too, but they turn a deaf ear to the black pastor’s urgent warning that the factory is slowly killing them.

Look, Listen And Live! SP&S 700 Rail Safety Faire in Salem on Saturday

In May 2005, a similar event drew more than 4,000 rail fans to the siding area adjacent to the park to experience one of America's biggest pieces of rail history up close.

(SALEM) - Train Locomotive SP&S 700 The 2nd Annual SP&S 700 Rail Safety Faire takes place at Salem's Riverfront Park Saturday, September 2nd.

Several thousand train buffs are expected to line the tracks to watch the big steam engine's trip south.

In January, the engine was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The SP&S 700 received this honor because it is a working example of the peak of proven steam and rail technology as it was at the end of the Age of Steam.

Thousands Enjoy Ears and Ears of Fun at Aumsville Corn Festival on Saturday

The city estimates that it serves nearly 16 tons of hot buttered corn-on-the-cob during the festival.

(AUMSVILLE) - Aumsville Corn Festival corn statue Thousands came to Porter Boone Park on Saturday to enjoy hot buttered corn-on-the-cob, and more during the 38th Annual Aumsville Corn Festival.

Thousands lined the streets of Aumsville to watch a family-fun parade make it’s way through town.

This years Grand Marshal was Louis Bales, and there were over 100 entries in this year's parade.
