Santa Claus Arrives at the Salem Riverfront Carousel (VIDEO)

The holiday season was put in motion Friday at Salem’s Riverfront Carousel.

(SALEM) - Santa and Mrs Claus at Salem's Riverfront Carousel This is the third year that Santa and Mrs. Claus have arrived in Salem by train. Between rainstorms, at least 250 people gathered to watch for the Portland Western Railroad pull in, Santa and his entourage waving from the caboose.

Donations Sought For Annual Shop With A Cop Event

Last year more than 200 children participated in the event.

(SALEM) - It’s time once again for the annual Salem area Shop With A Cop event.

This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, December 16th from 9:00 AM to about noon and is a cooperative effort involving local law enforcement, Wal-Mart and Law Enforcement for Youth, a local Salem based non-profit organization benefiting low income, at-risk and medically challenged youth.

Children are selected by referral from various local groups and organizations including the DHS Foster Care Program and the Boys and Girls Club of Salem.

This year’s event, as in past years, will be held at the south Salem Wal-Mart store at 5250 Commercial St SE.

Each participating child is partnered with a law enforcement or corrections officer and is given a $25 gift card to shop for a gift of their choice.

10TH Annual Crystal Apple Awards Ceremony Thursday Night

The awards event will also feature music from its own Crystal Apple Band and entertainment by nationally recognized inspirational comedian, and speaker, Judson Laipply.

(SALEM) - Crystal Apple Awards nominee Gay Hopkins 2nd Grade Teacher Keizer Elementary School The 10th annual Crystal Apple Awards dinner and ceremony will take place Thursday at the Historic Elsinore Theatre.

The event will be a theater-style evening with a “Live from the Red Carpet Show,” starting at 6:30 PM, with the program beginning at 7:00 PM.
The Crystal Apple Awards® gives the Salem area business community the opportunity to honor Salem-Keizer area educators for making significant contributions in the lives of children.

Since 1997, the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with Salem-Keizer Public Schools, and Salem-Keizer Education Foundation has recognized excellence in education, specifically among teachers, administrators and support staff.

As part of the Awards, sponsors visit each nominee’s employment site to present them with a certificate on behalf of the business community.

The awards culminate with a first-class, community-wide event where nominees and recipients are honored for their contributions in the lives of Salem-Keizer youth.

Keizer Chamber Hosts Veteran and Local Hero Tribute Luncheon

A special tribute to veterans of war, United States armed services, the Oregon National Guard, and local Heroes from Keizer, Salem, Marion County Sheriff’s Office

(KEIZER) - Veterans in Keizer Veterans and local heroes were honored for their dedication and service Wednesday at McNary High School.

The Keizer Chamber of Commerce brought together ermergency personnel, local veterans and community members for a very special event.

McNary High School FBLA students were on hand to help with the ceremony, as veterans and local heroes were introduced.

An Evening with Lewis Nordan in Oregon November 15th

Nordan’s novel “Wolf Whistle” is based on the murder of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old black boy killed for whistling at a white woman in 1955

(SALEM) - Lewis Nordan Critically acclaimed author Lewis Nordan will give a free reading Nov. 15 at 7:00 PM in the Hatfield Room of the Mark O. Hatfield Library at Willamette University.

Nordan is emeritus professor of creative writing at the University of Pittsburgh. His publications include almost 100 short stories in various journals and anthologies and seven books of fiction, including two collections of short stories and five novels. He also published a memoir. Olympia Vernon, Willamette’s Hallie Brown Ford Chair of Creative Writing, is sponsoring the event.

Publishers Weekly wrote that “Nordan’s engaging, wise, delightfully wry stories sound a melodious, bittersweet yawp, pulsating with love, grief, rage and a thirst for redemption.”

Nordan’s novel “Wolf Whistle” is based on the murder of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old black boy killed for whistling at a white woman in 1955 in Mississippi.

(SALEM) - Salem Sikh Temple A small portion of the nearly one million Sikhs in the U.S.A and Canada gathered in Salem Saturday, coming from all over the northwest to, in a way, neutralize the negative energy of July 22nd. That is when someone set fire to a flag with Khanda, the symbol of the Sikh faith on it, outside of the Dashmesh Darbar Sikh Temple on Oakhill Ave SE in South Salem.

OSU College of Forestry Celebrates a Century of Growth And Change

Major efforts are now in place to increase the numbers of women and minorities involved in forestry careers.

(CORVALLIS) - Oregon forest The College of Forestry at Oregon State University now has a student enrollment of more than 600, about 15,000 acres of college forests, 5,500 graduates and annual expenditures of more than $26 million, including 46 percent from grants and contracts.

The first degree program that began in 1906, however, was more modest.

There were four students in the first graduating class at what was then called Oregon Agricultural College, including T.J. Starker, a pioneer in the development of the Oregon forest products industry and whose family later sponsored the Starker Lecture Series that is prominent to this day.
