Oppressive police have been able to disappear people who are politically inconvenient. In Soviet Russia and Pinochet's Chile -- to name a couple of examples in recent history-- have created a reign of fear among the populace.

(LOS ANGELES) - LAPD In a startling reversal of an established transparency policy, the Los Angeles Police Department has refused a recent routine records request, citing a 1993 court case, County of Los Angeles v. Superior Court (Kusar).

The Kusar case affirmed the public's right to view contemporaneous records and the LAPD has cited this case in its refusal to release a record which is only nine months old.

Over a two year period, lawmakers voting in favor of passage received 26 times more in contributions ($24,424) from these interest groups than lawmakers voting against the measure ($948).

(BERKELEY, Calif.) - Salem-News.com The U.S. House of Representatives voted on Thursday to stop federal funding for National Public Radio.

The measure (HR 1076) passed on a (228-192) virtual party line vote, with seven Republicans breaking ranks to vote against passage. The measure faces an uphill battle in the Democratic-controlled Senate.
