Fire Crews Battle Wildfire Near Detroit

Citizens are asked to remain clear of the affected area so that crews can get in and attack the fire.

(SALEM, Ore.) - A fire was reported in the upper Elk Creek drainage area around 6:00 p.m. Wednesday evening, approximately 8 miles southwest of the town of Detroit, and about 2 miles west of Slate Rock.

The fire was estimated to be 35 acres in size. Fire resources are responding to the location at this time.

Oregon CAP Helps Locate Missing Aircraft

Debris from the plane was spotted in a ravine in the Owyhee Mountains area.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The Oregon CAP was called upon by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center to assist in the search for a missing aircraft in SE Oregon.

Two Oregon CAP aircraft, each with a 3 person aircrew, from Bend and Brookings, Oregon, were dispatched to assist in the search.

Oregon Air Guard 142nd Security Forces Squadron Returns from Iraq (PHOTOS)

Over the course of their deployment, the Guard airmen endured 15 rocket attacks and more than 100 incidents of small-arms fire.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Members of the Oregon Air National Guard returned to Oregon on Friday, August 7, 2009 after a six-month deployment to Iraq.

Captain Stephen Bomar, State Public Affairs Officer for the Oregon Guard, says twenty-nine airmen from the 142nd Security Forces Squadron arrived on four separate commercial flights at the Portland International Airport, to throngs of well-wishers, family members and friends.

More Details Released in Recovery of Desert Storm Pilot Michael Speicher

A Bedouin who was 11-years old at the time of the crash and did not have direct knowledge of where Speicher was buried, but knew of other Bedouins who did.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - The Navy announced today additional details regarding the recent discovery of the remains of Navy Capt. Michael "Scott" Speicher in Iraq.

The pilot was shot down flying a combat mission in an F/A-18 Hornet over west-central Iraq on Jan. 17, 1991, during Operation Desert Storm.

El Toro Marines Exposed to Radiation

Marines who worked in a radiation contaminated portion of a hangar at former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro were exposed to Radium 226. No action was taken to notify any Marine veteran who worked in the hangar.

(IRVINE, Calif.) - Marines were exposed to radiation in a huge maintenance hangar at former Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) El Toro, California. The number of Marines who worked in the portion of the hangar contaminated with Radium 226 (Ra 226) is unknown. The hangar was constructed in 1944 and continued to support operations until the base closed in 1999.

Radiation contaminant from a Ra 226 paint room was found during a radiological survey of the hangar by a Navy contractor.

The KODIAK plane is operated by MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship), a faith-based, nonprofit ministry that serves missions and isolated people around the world with aviation, communications and learning technologies.

Oregon Civil Air Patrol Prepares for Major USAF Evaluated Exercise

The exercise is designed to train and demonstrate the capability to rapidly respond to a variety of disaster/search and rescue scenarios.

(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - This week, six specially equipped Civil Air Patrol Cessna 182 aircraft and approximately 75 adult and teen aged cadet ground support and aircrew members from around the state will be tasked by a USAF evaluation team to respond from their home base locations to a multitude of realistic potential missions.

These missions will involve search and rescue, disaster relief and other emergency operations designed to test their capability to handle a wide variety of real world potential incidents such as earthquakes, floods and tsunamis.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Approximately 20 soldiers from the Second Rotation 2-641 Aviation commanded by LTC Christian Rees are returning to Oregon this evening following a six month tour of duty in Iraq.

Their mission in theater was to conduct flight missions required for battle command of theater operations, liaison among theater commands, transportation of supplies, equipment and personnel within the Iraq area of responsibility.

PTSD: Capt. Sullenberger and Ditching in the Hudson River - Reprise

Capt. Sullenberger had many nights of disturbed sleep after what he calls “the worst five minutes of my life”. I and other Combat Vets can sympathize with that. We had it every mission or artillery barrage.

(MOLALLA, Ore.) - There is so much denigrating and downright ignorance about PTSD, its causes and long term effects, that I feel compelled to continually write about it.

CBS News, 60 Minutes, replayed the interviews following this astonishingly dangerous but important event. I wrote at the time, see Salem-News.com, that Capt. Sullenberger would certainly have substantial PTSD from such a frightening and anguish producing event.

Helicopter Crashes in Grays Harbor: Both People Survive (VIDEO)

It was reported that the passenger survived the crash into the water without being injured. The pilot however, did reportedly suffer minor injuries.

(ASTORIA, Ore.) - The Coast Guard says a privately owned helicopter crashed into the shallow waters of Grays Harbor, Washington sometime before 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 7th 2009.

It happened about a mile north of Ocean Shores, Washington. The people were located and recovered early in the morning.
