Viking Football Ranked 13th in Preseason Poll

Portland State football player Brennan Carvalho has been named a preseason first team All-American by the Sports Network.

(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - psu sports logoThe Portland State football team opens the season ranked 13th in the Sports Network Preseason Poll.

The Vikings move up from a ranking of 19th at the conclusion of last season.

PSU spent the entire 2006 season ranked in the national poll, ranked anywhere from 13th to 25th.

Oregon Fan Day Set for August 25th

The first 1,000 kids (ages 12 and under) through the door will receive a free collapsable frisbee

(EUGENE, Ore. ) - ducks fan dayThe Oregon Athletic Department will conduct 2007 "Fan Day" on Saturday, August 25th.

The annual event, which runs from 10:00 a.m. to noon, allows fans to meet and greet players and coaches from this year's football and soccer teams.

It will again be held inside the Moshofsky Center, adjacent to Autzen Stadium.

The second-team all-Pac-10 Conference honoree and Oregon’s best offensive lineman could play any one of five positions along the interior line.

NASCAR: Kyle Busch Signs Multi-Year Deal to Drive No. 18

(HUNTERSVILLE, N.C.) - kyle busch photoJoe Gibbs Racing, winners of three Nextel Cup Series championships and more than 70 NASCAR races, has signed 22-year-old Kyle Busch to drive for the No. 18 team in Nextel Cup beginning in 2008.

"We're extremely pleased to have Kyle Busch as a part of the family here at Joe Gibbs Racing," said J.D. Gibbs, president of JGR.

Busch comes to JGR a proven winner in each of NASCAR's national touring series, with four Craftsman Truck Series victories, eight Busch Series wins and four Nextel Cup triumphs.

NASCAR: Wallace Stepping Down as Driver of No. 78 Car

Kenny Wallace made 10 starts this year in the No. 78 car.

(DENVER) - Furniture Row RacingFurniture Row Racing, a Denver-based Nextel Cup Series racing team, announced Tuesday that Kenny Wallace is stepping down as the driver of No. 78 car.

Officials for the team have said that Wallace will remain with the team as a consultant and will be called upon to run races as needed, but that he will also be available to drive for another team.

MLB Hall of Famer Phil Rizzuto Dead at 89

Rizzuto was Yankees All-Star shortstop, broadcaster.

(NEW YORK) - Yankees Phil RizzutoPhil "Scooter" Rizzuto, who overcame his diminutive size to become a key contributor to numerous New York Yankees championships and followed his playing career with a lengthy and entertaining stint in the team's broadcast booth, died Tuesday. He was 89.

Rizzuto's playing and broadcasting careers were in contrast with each other.

As a player, Rizzuto had the reputation for being an alert, heads-up competitor with keen baseball instincts that eventually earned him a place in the Hall of Fame.

Mariners Win on Sexson's Ninth Inning Blast

(SEATTLE) - seattle mariners logoThe first and last times first baseman Richie Sexson batted Monday night elicited loud and prolonged cheers from the fans at Safeco Field.

And when he struck out in his second and third at-bats, a few of the boo-birds returned.

Overall, though, the good vibes outweighed the bad ones on this night, and after the final pitch was thrown, almost all of the 39,902 fans were on their feet watching Sexson circle the bases after blasting a leadoff walk-off home run in the ninth, giving the Mariners a hard-earned 4-3 victory over the Twins.

University of Portland Women Favored in Preseason WCC Soccer Poll

Portland returns 14 letterwinners from last season’s 17-4-3 team, including the Pilots’ top six goal scorers.

(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - portland soccer photoComing off of an NCAA Tournament quarterfinal appearance in 2006, the University of Portland women’s soccer team was selected as the preseason favorite to take home the 2007 West Coast Conference regular season title, as voted on by the conference’s head coaches.

The Pilots, who return nine starters from last year’s squad, received six first place votes to tally 48 overall points.

Santa Clara University was selected second with 44 total points, and received two first place votes.

Portland State Picked Second in Preseason Poll

PSU finished 2006 with an overall record of 21-7.

(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - portland state logoPortland State Volleyball was selected to finish second in the Big Sky Conference in the 2007 pre-season coaches poll.

The Vikings received 53 points, 11 behind the unanimous choice for first place, Sacramento State.

Despite the loss of three starters and the increasingly difficult conference, Portland State is still favored to finish in the top two.
