(SAN FRANCISCO) - A few minutes after Denver's Jay Cutler hit Javon Walker with a sharp 24-yard throw, San Francisco's Alex Smith uncorked a perfect 26-yard pass to Arnaz Battle.
Neither play decided the Broncos' 17-13 preseason victory over the 49ers, yet both portended good things in the weeks ahead for the two clubs' young franchise quarterbacks.
Smith went 4-for-5 for 58 yards passing while leading two first-quarter scoring drives for the 49ers, and Cutler led a 67-yard scoring drive while playing just two series for the Broncos at Candlestick Park.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Willamette University has been picked to achieve a fourth place finish in the Northwest Conference football standings, according to the NWC Preseason Poll for 2007.
Linfield College was chosen to win the NWC title, while defending champion Whitworth University was selected to finish second.
Last year, Whitworth won the NWC title at 6-0 and represented the conference in the NCAA Division III national playoffs.

(TULSA, Okla.) - Even Tiger Woods can't believe how much he's accomplished at this point in his career.
But his fourth PGA Championship victory Sunday at Southern Hills will always be special to him, he said, because it's the first major he's won since daughter Sam's arrival.
The win was his fifth of the year, second straight and 59th overall as Woods clinched the top seed in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup.

After spinning out of the lead on lap 45, Stewart fought his way back to second place with two laps to go.

(ELKHART LAKE, Wisc.) - Sebastien Bourdais had done everything he could at Elkhart Lake's Road America except climb to the top step of the podium.
In each of his three previous starts at the 4.048-mile circuit, the French driver started on the front row and finished on the podium, but circumstances kept him from getting the win.
At this weekend's Champ Car Generac Grand Prix of Road America all of that changed as he led 51 of 53 laps, set the fastest race lap and won by nearly ten seconds. Read Full Article

(SPARTA, Ky. ) - As Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon – locked in a championship duel -- battled for second place through the midsection of the Meijer Indy 300 presented by Coca-Cola and Edy's, Tony Kanaan's No. 11 Team 7-Eleven car was knifing through the twilight air at Kentucky Speedway less than a second ahead.
The lead transferred through pit stop cycles, but Kanaan was never out of the top five.
Then, with the last challenge – passing A.J. Foyt for the lead on a Lap 190 restart – under his belt, Kanaan went on to win his second consecutive race to join the IndyCar Series championship hunt. Read Full Article

(ELKHART LAKE, Wisc.) - Locked in a tight battle for his fourth consecutive Series title, Sebastien Bourdais made quite a statement during qualifying for the Champ Car Generac Grand Prix at Road America.
Using a similar setup to yesterday, Bourdais dominated the session once again this time taking the pole by 1.5 seconds.

(WATKINS GLEN, NY) - Kevin Harvick gambled on fuel mileage Saturday at Watkins Glen International en route to victory in the NASCAR Busch Series Zippo 200, tying Jack Ingram for second place on the all time win list in the process.
Harvick, who also was victorious in last week's controversial road course race at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Canada, claimed his fifth victory of the season and 31st of his career to match Ingram’s career output.
