UN Foundation Statement on the Release of the U.S. Government Strategy on the Millennium Development Goals

CEO says strategy “underscores how the U.S. and UN are working together”

(Washington, D.C.) - United Nations Foundation CEO Kathy Calvin issued the following statement after the release of the updated U.S. Government Strategy on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs):

"The release of the updated U.S. Government Strategy to achieve the Millennium Development Goals is a great sign that the Obama Administration views this week's high-level Summit at the United Nations as an historic opportunity to make unprecedented progress in solving global challenges. The UN Foundation was proud to host the dialogue among UN, NGO, U.S. Government and private sector officials (including National Security Council Senior Director Gayle Smith and USAID Administrator Raj Shah) on July 30, 2010 at our headquarters in Washington, D.C. Since that time, it is clear that a robust dialogue has taken place that has strengthened this document and has elevated the discussion about how to build partnerships that can best advance the MDGs.

"The strategy released September 17, 2010 underscores how the U.S. and UN are working together on issues such as maternal and child health, poverty reduction, fighting diseases and protecting the environment. These proposed principles and tactics will help the U.S. and UN work in partnership with the world community to promote efficient, sustainable development assistance that is in line with Americans' compassion and global vision. The document's expanded "call to action" section will help catalyze discussion during this week's Summit meeting as we work together to map ways to create a better world.

"This strategy, together with the efforts of thousands of people including UN Foundation Founder and Chairman Ted Turner (who serves as one of the UN Secretary-General's MDG Advocates), makes it clear that we all have a role in advancing the MDGs. We invite people everywhere to become involved and help the UN make change possible. Learn more at www.unfoundation.org/mdgs ."
