(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - The Democratic Governors Association today welcomed former Governor John Kitzhaber to the Oregon governor’s race, in which a field of strong Democratic candidates are vying for the nomination. “Oregonians want leaders who will continue to provide pragmatic solutions for the problems they face every day, especially the important work of creating and saving jobs. Governor Kitzhaber’s entry into the race adds depth to an already strong field of candidates and signals our party’s determination to hold on to this seat,” said Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer, chair of the DGA. “Governor Ted Kulongoski has started the work of expanding health care for children, working on commonsense solutions to Oregon’s transportation problems and investing wisely in schools. We’re confident that our nominee will focus on rebuilding the economy and keeping Oregon on the right path.” Republicans in the state have struggled to win statewide office. “Oregon is a state where voters want responsible, thoughtful leadership that focuses more on solutions that political ideology,” said Nathan Daschle, the DGA’s executive director. “Democrats in the state have a long track record, not only of winning, but also being centrist leaders. No matter who wins the primary, we are confident of our chances to hold this seat.” Democrats have performed strongly in Oregon. President Obama won the state by 16 points. The Congressional delegation has only one Republican, from a district that heavily favors the GOP. Both houses of the state legislature are led by Democrats. The Democratic Governors Association is the only organization devoted solely to electing and re-electing Democratic governors. The DGA is better positioned than ever before to impact governors races, with record-breaking fundraising in 2008 and 2009.
