Reverse Macho in Dating Makes for Greater Restraint

Today's reality show on romance reflects a slower pace, even if the speeds on the road go ever higher. You and I are living through an age of countless paradoxes.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Undetected by pollsters, a backlash against the "macho" dating personality is causing men to think twice before pressuring a woman to take to the mattress as an instant matter of course. At last, signs of the Golden Rule in gender relations are showing up. Perhaps the reality that date rape is being prosecuted more frequently is a factor. There are now more female attorneys out there than at any time in our nation's history. DNA evidence has made male denial an exercise in futility. And the substantial dropout rate of men in the work force as compared to women makes the financial leverage men once had into a less potent force. I've conducted interviews on today's Singles Scene and find an apparent shift in emphasis. Dating has entered a new era, perhaps a major transition. It has become a source of stress relief: concentration on joint relaxation rather than bedroom recreation. Here are some of the aspects uncovered in the New Protocol of Relative Restraint

  • More singles are searching for their mates through online dating, much fewer through the bar scene.
  • In such cases, the first date is more customarily a meeting in a public place for coffee, etc.
  • Women resist inviting a man into their home during the first several get-togethers.
  • An increased interchange on values and lifestyles has replaced favorite music, movies, foods.
  • Most couples now rule out overnight travel until exclusivity is first achieved.
  • Many times friends will serve as screeners to help detect "red flags" in the behavior arena.
  • Libido restraint in being discussed openly, often as a component of the second or third date.
  • Less reliance on using alcohol and getting drunk to pave the way for seduction.

The old Macho model has in fact made honorable males feel stereotyped. They resent being put "on the defensive" by women who have felt abused my hyper-aggressive males. These men refuse become mere sexual pawns in some chess game.

They want to wipe clean the flawed image that every guy out there is a rank opportunist. We are not saying that lust has vanished from the planet. Our findings suggest there is greater moderation and a climate of restraint. As more women go through divorce and wind up have more sex partners than that of the 60's, they are far more choosy for whom they will accept. Cable tv and the internet has widened the playing field.. Today's reality show on romance reflects a slower pace, even if the speeds on the road go ever higher. You and I are living through an age of countless paradoxes. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: Lee ran a successful singles club called Brunch Lovers League when still in his 30's, and did counseling of couples who were self-sabotaging for some 33 years.
