Op Ed: Oregonians Should Stand Fast on 50

Tobacco, the "Big-T," uses the airwaves to lie about an Oregon measure that helps kids, Measure 50, and Oregonians owe allegiance to kids, NOT a noxious weed well-known As killer poison ever since slavery.

(BEND, Ore.) - No matter the pressures purposely applied by heavy-cost tv-image propaganda, Oregonians owe it to themselves to stand fast for Measure 50 in the rapidly-approaching vote.

What your solid stance provides is precisely the strength needed now to prevent further extremely damaging impacts from that noxious weed --TOBACCO-- already notorious for millions of deaths and lingering illnesses around the world, ever since its extremely lucrative beginning in our democracy bolstering and capitalizing on human slavery.

That's why Southerners-then chose it --because it was so lucrative. That should provide a ringing definition of what's at stake, and who suffers, and what MUST be done about it...of which Measure 50 is direct action NOW to support and strengthen the decision forced upon our State by the delinquencies of the GOP in this last legislature.

Tobacco, the "Big-T," is using the airwaves to lie about an Oregon measure that helps kids, and Oregonians owe allegiance to kids, NOT a noxious weed well-known As killer poison ever since slavery.

Further dollar-driven, misleading and maliciously-intended tv images now seek to make Measure 50 seem a dangerous invasion of the Oregon Constitution, but factually, they fall flat on their face.

Those highly produced images are self sabotaged by the overly-pleasant “family values” couple chosen for their ostensible “middle-class/value” appearance.

From the first time they were seen on home screens across the state, in various versions, one has to wonder what the next “family dialog” they will so clearly and cleanly and fortuitously indulge; now that they have openly expressed forebodings and fear of Constitutional damages never, ever, actually at risk in any way.

What do you think “Daddy” will now suggest? I doubt if he will draw out a pack and offer a death-stick to that loving wife so well-played there.

Measure 50 is NOT, by any means, the first initiative proposing Constitutional change; nor is it in any way possible for it to do damage NOW or LATER to what the Oregon Constitution stands for and accomplishes for all of us.

We can decide that for any appropriately needed such change or clarification.

The Measure 50 matter is forced into Constitutional presentation simply by the repeated failures of the “elected representative assembly” to deal with it as it should have done.

That was sabotaged by strong internal interests well-motivated by “corporate campaign contributions”.

Given that enforced choice- an unforeseen consequence of “corporate person-hood” procured by the same methods decades ago from our national Supremes, in the Railroad Era known for its legislative corruption-- we are fortunate in Oregon to have the mechanism and protocol providing potential rational and reasonable solution for such Legislative failure.

It is now deadly-obvious Big-T is determined to get what has already been paid-for, no matter how much more moola must now be massaged into public-opinion/shaping propaganda by the pretend-morality of “Constitutional damage” sure to be done.

That’s as obvious a lie as others already in evidence for you to “see with own eyes” in this revolting series; and well-reported via The OREGONIAN already.

Don’t be confused or confabulated from your rational, reasonable, demanded and essential support for this measure.

In place, Measure 50 will further control and consolidate the real work to repair the damages done to millions of Americans via this noxious weed, by its practical cost-control applied not only to slow demand leading to death, but also to provide currently and desperately needed healthcare for our Oregon kids.

That attack on the entire national health continues, perpetrated ever since slavery-days by corporate interests intent on dollars and profits despite the documented major tolls vs the total population; via not only medical dollar-millions demanded from taxpayers to provide for those impacted; but the desperate family damages unavoidable through continued open sale of this poisonous product.

That’s WHY a once-vigilant national administration forced large dollar penalties in the historic forced agreement which keeps Big-T from using the usual normal advertising channels- and thus now forced to muscle mental aberrations from Oregon citizens through dollar-encrusted Oregon television channels.

We will either pay-off by our mutually-determined and rational, reasonable vote- or by more millions spent needlessly to make amends for allowing Oregonians to be so seduced, set up and simultaneously poisoned by a product already proven to have killed millions worldwide. This practice has over past generations and decades, deserving only to be removed from public consumption. That is because it is serving corporate profit-interests at the cost of millions-more damaged and eventually dead.

Remember, the next vice they decide to tax may be your own! Big Macs? Snickers Bars? You want to pay an extra $1 a bottle for beer? We *know* all of these are unhealthy and in the case of alcohol it is responsible for at least 50% of person-to-person crimes (as a police officer I see this every day - at least half the people I arrest are under the influence of either alcohol or drugs or both - probably 75% of domestic assaults take place when one or both are intoxicated). How about head phones and stereos? A 10% "hearing damage tax" sounds about right to deal with the hearing problems brought on by using headphones turned up to loudly. It can't happen? Just wait. This is just the start ...

I'm a smoker who almost hopes measure 50 passes. Why? Because every time cigarette taxes are increased, it merely drives more and more people into the arms of the 10 Tribes of the Seneca Nation of New York - the only sovereign Native American group of tobacco sellers that is exempt, by a New York State Supreme Court decision, from the requirement to report sales to state tax agencies. This, in turn, will force Oregon to spend more money on fruitless enforcement than it take in from revenue ... making the whole viscious circle of tabacco taxation more pointless.

Neal et al: Unfortunately enough money can and does buy any election so far recorded. Which is why unremitting vigilance and extremely strong further action is needed very rapidly re "corporate campaign contributions" right here in Oregon,as well as nationally. The basically erroneous concept itself of corporate person-hood is a falsification obtained by fraudulent and criminal means via corruption of key Supremes in the Railroad Era. We need to summon courage and political organization for correcting extreme perversion of democratic principles as thus allowing precisely this kind of distortion damaging what democracy could otherwise even now bring into being.

Let us hope that money cannot buy this election. From reports I find the following... over $9 million donated to the Yes on 50 campaign of which $5.8 million is from Marlboro maker Phillip Morris and $3.3 million is from Camel maker Reynolds. This means about 99% or more of the funding for Yes on 50 comes from two tobacco companies. It makes one wish we could restrict, somehow, out of state money from our in state initiative elections. Supporters of M50 have raised $1.6 million, oe about 20% of the funds No on 50 have available to them. And if they got a big influx you know Reynolds and Phillip Morris can just cut more checks. Ah well...

Henry - Im not disagreeing other than that outside of movies there was no overlap of hominid species and dinosaurs. 50-100 million years separate the two. Wooly mammoths maybe. But deadly risk or not prohibition still does not work. Education and treatment availability for addicts wanting to stop do work. Not making folks who want help required to admit to criminal activity does woek. Nothing will stop the truly stupid from selfdestructive behaviors but we can minimize the harms to society, put in as much prevention and redemption options as possible and support public health care in the meanwhile. Not perfect but the best solution currently available I;m afraid. Ah well...

Neal: Appreciate your insights, perceptive as always, but even Mr. Neanderthal finally decided it was time to kill off that dinosaur decimating family and friends. He probably used his axe or spear; we have both taxes and health regulations at our full civilized disposal. We face same situation, with the question-now surely simply whether we have both courage and wisdom motivating us to act --as we have already done previously for other deadly risks. Poison is poison, and any wise and well-civilized person knows you not only avoid it but make sure it does not ever reach your family and friends.

Neal Feldman October 5, 2007 5:06 pm (Pacific time)

To claim the Oregon Constitution should not be 'plagued' my picayune targeted changes, limits etc is about 20-30 years too late, at least. And the argument I see a lot that as smokers quit the funding would dry us is misleading, because smokers cost the health care funding far more than they pay in cigarette taxes, even with M50 in place - so if all smokers quit GREAT! There would then be a LOT more funding available to fund health care for kids than even with M50 full bore on. Anything that causes a voluntary reduction in tobacco use is good for all levels and aspects of society other than the bottom lines of tobacco companies and those related. The ads are misleading and dishonest and pretty much outright lies, but what else do we expect from Big Tobacco who denied for decades their products were harmful? The truth? . LOL! Ah well...
