India Steps Up for Battered Sri Lankan Tamils, Finally

Lawyers of Supreme Court and Members of the Delhi Tamil Advocates Association hold Mass Protest March in New Delhi condemning the inaction of International Community in bringing war criminals of the Sri Lankan Regime to Justice.

(SACRAMENTO / DELHI) - Advocates for Sri Lankan Tamils are moved by a mass protest against the war crimes of Sri Lanka today in Delhi. Visvanathan Sivam, whose name is familiar to those engaged in this struggle, called the news from Lawyers of Supreme Court and Members of the Delhi Tamil Advocates Association "most welcome". Sivam is not alone.

"It is about time the Tamils in Tamil Nadu make an effort to hold similar demonstrations in other state capitals. The news outlets and the politicians have kept the Indians ignorant of what is happening in Sri Lanka is a genocide and nothing short of it. Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh was forced to withdraw from CHOGM, but Salman Khurshid has taken his place to white wash the genocide."

Up to 160,000 human beings were murdered in Sri Lanka during the final months of the long-running civil war between Tamil separatists and the Sri Lankan government. Experts and advocates of the embattled Tamil people say it was a Genocide.

The rebel Tamil Tigers or LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) fought a war for independence and made their share of mistakes along the way, impressing children into military service, creating the suicide vest, etc. But there are rules of war that are very specific and Sri Lanka violated almost all of them - thousands of times.

Two wrongs do not make a right and if Sri Lanka is allowed to irresponsibly abscond from international justice, then the message sent to the world is simple, that Genocide is an option for governments.

The Delhi Tamil Advocates Association said of the mass rally,

"The time has come to shed our slavery of ignorance. Ignorance, which has kept us from breathing freedom, freedom from war, freedom from chauvinism, freedom from caste and religion and freedom from dogmas which teach us that a fellow human being can be killed, raped, maimed and ill treated because he/she belongs to a different group, which speaks a different language and follow a different belief system."

What started in 1931 as a colonial expediency, the sharing of power by the British with the Sinhalese run cabinet has ended in 2009, with the enslavement of Eelam Tamils to the Sinhalese ruling majority. Under the guise of ending the civil war and fighting against terrorism, the Sinhalese majority regime led by Mahinda Rajapaksa has perpetrated one of the worst war crimes in recent history.

The government deceived Tamil civilians by directing them into so-called "No-Fire Zones" where they were decimated by artillery with extreme prejudice. This brutality was seemingly dwarfed by the actions of the Sri Lankan army after they entered the zones their guns had been pounding. Children were murdered, girls and women were raped, Tamil Tigers who surrendered with white flags were shot to death against the strictest rules of war, and the erosion of the Tamil hold on this land has never ceased.

The Delhi Tamil Advocates Association also stated:

Isai Priya and Balachandran

Indisputable evidences of war crimes is at hand, this includes the execution of child Balachandran, the rape and killing of actress and news reader Isai Priya and the execution of surrendered prisoners of war, perpetrated by the Sinhalese army, which operated under the command of President Rajapaksa and his brother, Defense secretary Gothabaya. The indifference of International Community in bringing these war criminals to Justice is shocking.

The group demands:

We, the Tamils of Delhi condemn the inaction of the Indian Government, the UN and the International Community and we urge them to act in fulfillment of the following demands:

1. International War Crimes Tribunal has to be setup to investigate war crimes perpetrated during Sri Lankan civil war.

2. A resolution should be passed in the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly to urge the International Community and the Indian Government to set up the International War Crimes Tribunal for Sri Lanka.

3. The International Community and the Indian Government have to take responsibility to stop rape of Tamil women, White van abductions, demographic reengineering and militarization of the Tamil areas.

4. The International Community and the Indian Government has to recognize, what is going on in Sri Lanka is genocide.

Tim specializes in writing about political and military developments worldwide; and maintains that the label 'terrorist' is ill placed in many cases; specifically with the LTTE Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, where it was used as an excuse to slaughter people by the tens of thousands; and in Gaza, where a trapped population lives at the mercy of Israel's destructive military war crime grinder. At the center of all of this, Tim pays extremely close attention to the safety and welfare of journalists worldwide.
