Albany Seeking New City Council Representative

Applicants must be at least 18-years- old, have lived in Albany for at least one year, and in Ward I for at least 90 days.

(ALBANY ) - The Albany City Council is seeking a new representative from Ward I to replace Councilor Doug Killin, who is Mayor-elect and will take office January 1st, 2007.

The Albany City Charter requires that a position left vacant midterm be filled by appointment by the remaining members of the council.

The council is seeking applications from residents of Ward I who are interested in serving the remaining two years of Killin’s term.

The term expires on December 31st, 2008.

Ward I is the portion of the city generally west and north of Pacific Boulevard including North Albany and includes voting precincts 001, 11, 091, and 100.

A map of the City Council wards is available at Albany City Hall or on the City’s Web site, under Geographic Information Services.

Applicants need to indicate why they are interested in serving on the City Council and what experience, interests, and perspective they would bring to the position. The council plans to interview qualified applicants at a special meeting at 7:15 PM Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007, and to appoint a new councilor to be sworn in prior to the January 10th, 2007, City Council meeting. The Council meets at 7:15 PM on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month, though the schedule is usually adjusted to accommodate the year-end holidays. The Council also holds work sessions on the Mondays preceding Council meetings from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM and meets several times each year with the Albany Budget Committee. The Council also holds periodic meetings with the Linn and Benton County Boards of Commissioners, the Greater Albany Public Schools Board of Directors, and other meetings as needed. City councilors are also members of the CARA Advisory Board and act as the CARA Agency which meet the third Wednesday of each month at 5:15 PM. Councilors receive a monthly stipend of $110 and are reimbursed for expenses related to Council business. Those interested in serving on the Council can download an application from the city’s website, www.cityofalbany.net, or send a letter to Betty Langwell, City Clerk, Albany City Hall, P.O. Box 490, Albany, OR 97321 to request an application.

Completed forms must be returned to the City Clerk’s Office by 5:00 PM on Friday, December 22nd.
