(PORTLAND, Ore.) - This morning at approximately 9:11 a.m., Portland Police officers responded to a residence in the 10800 Block of Southeast Henderson Drive to assist deputies from the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office on an incident where a subject fired a handgun.

Officers arrived in the area and spoke with deputies who were at the residence to conduct a welfare check on behalf of the Department of Human Services. Deputies made contact inside the residence with a 42-year-old male who retrieved a handgun and pointed it at himself.

Deputies backed out of the residence then heard a single gunshot from inside. A neighborhood perimeter was established and the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and the Hostage Negotiation Team (HNT) were called to assist in safely securing the residence. Some neighbors were evacuated as negotiators attempted contact with subject inside the residence.

Officers from the Explosives Disposal Unit (EDU) utilized a robot to enter the residence and it was discovered that the subject was deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officers then entered the residence and determined that nobody else was home.

At this point, detectives from the Portland Police Bureau have taken over the scene and will be conducting an investigation into the circumstances of the suicide.

The person's identity is being withheld at this time until family can be notified.

Additional details will be released when they become available.
