(PORTLAND, Ore.) - An elderly driver lost control of his car today in Portland, crashing into a father with a small child, while also striking a second adult. The 23-month old child was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The Portland Police Major Crash Team reports that the collision involving a vehicle and three pedestrians happened at approximately 11:15 a.m. Monday, 8 Nov. 2010, on North Lombard Street near the intersection of North Interstate Avenue. All three persons including a 23-month old child were transported to the hospital. The child is in critical condition with life threatening injuries. Major Crash Team Investigators have learned in their preliminary investigation that the vehicle driven by the elderly male was northbound on North Interstate Avenue and turned eastbound onto North Lombard Street. The driver of the vehicle is a male approximately 70 to 80 years of age. He stopped and was cooperating with police. According to a statement from Portland Police Public Information Officer Lt. Kelli Sheffer, "His vehicle collided with a male pedestrian and then into another male (father) and 23-month old child. After colliding with the father and child the vehicle continued into a pole. The male driver has also been transported to an area hospital due to complaints of an unknown medical condition." Police had a large area including North Lombard Street, North Montana Avenue, North Interstate Avenue and the Astro gas station on the northwest corner of the intersection blocked off for hours while they investigated what happened. The Portland Police Major Crash Team reports there is no change in the medical condition of the 23-month old child struck earlier this afternoon. Witnesses told police that the father and two nurses who happened to be close to the crash, performed CPR on the child. The child was breathing when transported by ambulance. This is an ongoing investigation and names will not be released at this time. More information will be released as soon as available.
