(SALEM, Ore.) - The Senate Education and General Government Committee and the House Education Committee will hold a joint meeting next Monday in the Capitol. The full day meeting has an agenda packed with updates on recently passed legislation, much of it timely in light of recent reports about sex abuse in schools. “Many people have expressed concerns to me in light of what they’ve been reading in the papers about misconduct in our schools,” said Senator Vicki Walker, chair of the Senate Committee on Education and General Government. “This is an issue that I care deeply about, and it will receive a full discussion on Monday.” The Senate and House Committees will hear from the executive director of the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission regarding the implementation of Senate Bill 379. The bill, sponsored by Senate Walker, requires school districts to develop child abuse prevention training programs. It took effect on June 20th of this year. “We have a very full agenda on Monday. The Legislature passed a great deal of important legislation on education during the 2007 session, and we will be checking in on the progress that has been made in implementing that legislation,” said Senator Walker. Other agenda items include an update on the Shared Responsibility Model; a review of new high school graduation requirements; an update on the School Improvement Fund; and a discussion about the timeline and implementation of Senate Bill 479, which requires schools to replace potentially dangerous metal halide and mercury vapor light bulbs with safer alternatives. In a separate, break-out session, the Senate Committee on Education and General Government will meet to discuss proposed legislation to prevent fraud of Oregon’s Business Name Renewal Registration Fee. The joint meeting will begin at 9:00 AM November 5th in Hearing Room F of the Capitol. Articles for November 1, 2007 | Articles for November 2, 2007 | Articles for November 3, 2007 | Quick Links

I wish they would institute real changes that would make a difference. Ban multiple guess tests and do everything with either show your work answer blanks for math or essay type questions for other topics, get away from 'teaching to the test' by having the teachers unaware what will be on the test as much as their students are, just knowing all of what might be on it, if a student does not have a 1.5gpa in a class (D ) the class does not count towards credits needed for advancement (do away with social advancing... letting kids into the next grade just because their classmates advance), require fluency in English by grade 5... if the kid joins the school later than grade 2 and is not fluent they get three years of ESL and that is all. Additionally there should be expanded subject matter and requirements/expectations in the sciences, math and civics. I would also like to see starting at grade 5 100 hours per yr minimum community service by students... this could be in groups or individually... helping a neighbor who is elderly or disabled, aiding a govt agency in some manner, etc. Ah well...

Education in English or Spanish? I though we took over the Mexican curriculum. My tax dollars at work. Pay these no good Politicians for talking about safer alternatives to light bulbs? Give me a break. Teach our kids writing, reading and math IN ENGLISH and do your darn job for the American People. You disgust me, every one of you Politicians in the Capitol. You are an embarrassment for the State of Oregon.
