(CORVALLIS, Ore.) - An Oregon State University sophomore student was arrested by Corvallis police Saturday night on campus when officers found a small homemade improvised explosive device in the man's backpack while he was in the area of a large crowd attending the Flat Tail Festival. According to OSP Sergeant Vonn Schleicher, Saturday at 10:50 p.m., OSP Oregon State University troopers and Corvallis police officers were patrolling in the campus area monitoring an estimated crowd of approximately 600 people attending a series of live bands performing at the Flat Tail Festival on the Oregon State University campus. The OSP Bomb Squad was called and rendered the device safe. Officers contacted a male urinating in public in some bushes near the festival site identified as 19-year old Nicholas W. Dyer of Portland. During contact with Dyer, officers found the small homemade device approximately the size of a water bottle and illegal fireworks in his backpack he was carrying. The OSP Bomb Squad was called and rendered the device safe. Dyer was lodged by Corvallis police at the Benton County Correctional Facility for Unlawful Possession of a Destructive Device and Unlawful Manufacturing of a Destructive Device. Benton County Sheriff's Office inmate roster website indicates he was relased Sunday from the jail. Articles for May 30, 2009 | Articles for May 31, 2009 | Articles for June 1, 2009 | Quick Links

Way more points for responding to me openly, honestly. I don't see why you find it necessary to insult me, though. Yes, I do consider an IED in Iraq and a bottle rocket in the US entirely different things. Particularly, the IED in Iraq is covered in sharp bits of metal! I have friends in Iraq who have experienced the roadside bombs and I have seen footage from a lot of it. I was really sorry to hear about those 12 deaths last night, too. The violence in Iraq and now in Iran is very disturbing to me. And no, I've never honestly feared for my life, but I spend a lot of time fearing for my freedoms when I read stories like this. As for good reasons for doing "little kid crap" like making improvised fireworks (or "explosives"), it's fun. Maybe you've forgotten how to have fun because of all the negative writing you've been doing, but I sure haven't. I haven't forgotten how to enjoy my life, nor how to defend myself. Best wishes for you. Thanks for taking the time instead of simply ignoring me; I know that would have been a lot easier!
Editor: Cool, I see a truce in that. I hope I haven't forgotten to have fun and I hope you aren't right about being affected by constantly writing about the events around us. I haven't surfed in a year, that gives weight to your point.

Do whatever you want... Just don't throw them at people and I'll be fine with it. And don't arrest some dude for making a better firework to set off. He's not my friend, but I like modding fireworks. Hello, it's not a big deal unless it's contained. If you throw a bottle at someone, it will bounce off, do you understand? Obviously you are considerably more insecure than I am. So I must assume it is you who is the loser.
Editor: Well that may be a hard one to prove either way, I am just shocked that in this day and age, that it would be important to stick up for what this guy did. We didn't keep the story alive after it was over, that seems like it would be a credit in your eyes. I am personally familiar with the damage caused by explosives. Last night I wrote about the latest 12 deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan and half of the Americans were killed by IED's. Apples and oranges? Maybe but probably not. So if some idiot wants to play with explosives near a college campus they should expect to see their name in headlines, and they should do it knowing that the law and society are against them. I don't think you have a popular point of view, and I'd bet money on the fact that you have never heard a shot fired in anger, and I doubt you have ever had to run for a bomb shelter during a mortar or rocket attack. It's a pretty screwed up thing having to wonder if your HUMEE is going to contact an IED. There aren't a lot of good reasons for doing little kid crap as an adult. Talk about needing to grow up, isn't that how you started your little pro-explosives rant? Also, did you hear about the guy who blew his hand off in Salem a few days ago? We covered it as a video report, you ought to check that out.

Oh whatever, he had a firework, grow up.
Editor: We should grow up and be like your friend and possess illegal items made of gunpowder near large crowds? You are a loser.
