(LONDON) - Big changes for British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who took the reigns from Tony Blair, becoming the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on 27 June 2007.

It was announced Tuesday that Gordon Brown is resigning his position as British Prime Minister as the country appears to be closing in on the formation of a new government.

Five days after an inconclusive election in Great Britain, two of the country's major parties are preparing to combine efforts to send the Conservative Party back into power.

This is happening as talks between opposition Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties take place. Rule by the center-left Labour Party has been in effect for 13 years.

Regarding Brown's resignation, the Queen's private secretary has been informed of the resignation intention.

Brown told reporters outside his Downing Street office, "In the event that the queen accepts, I shall advise her to invite the leader of the opposition to seek to form a government. I wish the next prime minister well as he makes the important choices for the future."

Conservative leader David Cameron now moves forward to become the country's new leader; Britain's Prime Minister.

The conservatives won the most votes in last Thursday's election, beating Brown's ruling Labour Party, with the Liberal Democrats coming in third.
