(CHICAGO) - The civil war in Syria between rebel forces and President Bashar Assad’s Syrian army, escalated this weekend when Israel bombed Damascus, the capital of Syria. With its standard rationale familiar to Gaza residents, Israel released an official story that claimed the bombing was carried out for defensive purposes. The Reuters story in the Jerusalem Post, reported that the Israeli airstrikes, which killed “dozens of Syrian soldiers close to Damascus”, were “downplayed” by Israeli leaders. The “downplaying” consisted of Israel’s claim it was not attempting to influence the Syrian civil war, but wanted only to “stop Iranian missiles reaching Lebanese Hezbollah militants”. To bolster its official version of the raid, veteran Israeli lawmaker Tzahi Hanegbi, a confidant of Netanyahu, told Israel Radio that ”Israel wants to avoid “an increase in tension with Syria by making clear that if there is activity, it is only against Hezbollah, not against the Syrian regime.” (It should be noted that Hezbollah and Assad’s government are allies.) The Post rushed past the fact that “dozens of Syrian soldiers” were killed outside Damascus. There was no mention, not even a sympathetic nod to the possibility, that civilians may also have died in the attacks. Instead, the Post story got to the heart of the matter, the heart, that is, for Israel:
Major General Yair Golan, Israel’s commander on both the Syrian and Lebanese fronts, was quick to reassure “fearful” Israelis. The general was out jogging with troops when a Reuters reporter caught up with him. He told the reporter, “There are no winds of war”. Then he added, “Do you see tension? There is no tension. Do I look tense to you?”. Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu was also calm. The Prime Minister had already begun a a scheduled visit to Beijing, which the Post story indicated was “an apparent sign of confidence Syrian President Bashar Assad would not retaliate”. Netanyahu received veiled criticism in Beijing where Chinese leaders urged “restraint without mentioning Israel by name”. China and Russia are the two major powers who are Syrian President Assad’s “protectors” in the UN Security Council. Russia said the strikes by Israel “caused particular alarm”, a mild reprimand to a nation that has just bombed a neighbor with whom it is not officially at war. President Vladimir Putin and US Secretary of State John Kerry were expected to meet Tuesday, the Jerusalem Post reported, “to try to tackle differences over the Syrian crisis”. In an Independent story that appeared January 25, before the Israeli bombing of Damascus, Russia’s Prime Minister, Dmitry Medvedev said that President Assad’s chances of retaining power in Syria are getting “smaller and smaller by the day”.
Beyond Jerusalem, the Jerusalem Post found different opinions on Israel’s bombing:
Beyond the conflict between major nations who have lined up on opposing sides in the civil war, the human cost of the war is also massive:
Akiva Eldar, former Ha’aretz columnist, introduced the notion of “Israel’s Moral Responsibility” in an Al Monitor column.
In his hard-hitting, thoughtful, Guardian column, Glenn Greenwald expands on the theme of how both the US and Israel operate, with impunity, from their nationalist, tribalist stances toward their neighbors:

Hello, I enjoyed reading your article on the recent developments in Syria. I would like to state that I am a citizen of the United States also, I live and work in Boston, Massachusetts. I am not a big supporter of Israel, but to be fair I do favor them over the Iranians, Syrians, and Hizbollah...etc. who swear to destroy every one of us every single day. I know I know its because we steal their oil and leave US Soldiers on their land.....Otherwise they wouldnt hate us, as I'm sure would be argued likewise with the recent Boston Marathon attacks by two ethnic Chechens, except for the small little problem of the US never having any issue with Chechna other than indirectly supporting it by being an ENEMY of RUssia's. You starting to see where I am going with this? I am only 26 years old and just have a strong interest in foreign relations as a topic, but your article reminds me of how sad these days are for the West. You make no mention of Israel setting up hospital on the Golan to treat wounded Syrians, AFTER HAVING TO VET THEM TO NOT LET ANY TERRORISTS (excuse me, "freedom fighters") GET THROUGH AND BLOW UP THE ENTIRE MEDICAL ENCAMPMENT...again that Israeli citizens work and man, to treat Syrian or other arab nations' wounded....That is as many as they can recover in between taking fire from either side in Syria's civil war. And the saddest part...I dont really trust Israel, i think they have way too much influence and too strong a lobby in Washington - I JUST SEE LIFE OBJECTIVELY. Good day sir
You see life objectively? This, while you literally root for an apartheid government that abuses Palestinians 365 days a year, maintaining separate laws for Jews and everyone else, the terrorists are the governments that cause the bloodshed, those are the U.S. and Israel. You should study issues far more, the kids from Boston were only born Chechen, they were raised in the good old USA where people support Israel's ethnic cleansing. Sorry friend but your views are racist, and very very typical of the vastly undereducated U.S. public.

I wonder whether Israel is now acting as the U.S. proxy in the Syrian conflict. The U.S. is probably politically and economically unable to actively join the Syrian conflict so why not let Israel do it for us.
